Penske Shocks from Motorcycle Metal on 2009 Road King
I put the Penske shocks from Howard at motorcyclemetal.com on my 2009 Road King last night. The shocks lowered my bike 1 inch, which I prefer for a more flat-footed feel at a stop, and improved the ride quality. These 12-inch shocks feel better to me to me then the stock 13-inch shocks.
I traded my Street Glide for the Road King, and part of the deal was that the dealer had to switch the shocks for me. I went yesterday with my old shocks, and the dealer kept insisting that these shocks would not fit a 2009. He was 99.9% positive they wouldn't fit. I finally said just give me the damn shocks.
I went to Howard's place in Davie, and he was kind enough to help me switch the shocks out. He even took the time to teach me how to do it myself for next time. Howard's a great guy.
Just have to ask: Are the Penske's worth the price (approx. twice that of the competition)? I ask because I would consider them if they they are really THAT good. What do you think?
I am trying to decide which shocks I am going to buy to upgrade the suspension on my SG. I have no problem with the stock shocks, but my wife hates the ride on the SG. She says my heritage rode better. I don't think so, but she can't ride as far on the SG as she could the heritage.
I have no desire to lower the bike, raising the rear an inch or so wouldn't bother me at all. I am looking at the progressive 440's, but I am undecided at this time. I would appreciate any input from any of you who have upgraded.
do not buy 440's, you will be much happier if you buy shocks that are sprung for your weight and riding style,i.e works, YSS, Ohlins, Penske. You can buy very good shocks for 600.00+ or very crappy ones for +/-500.00.
I think the Penske's are worth the price - but saying anything else would be admitting I paid too much for shocks.
Seriously - I went to Howard after hitting a pothole with the stock shocks on my 2008 Street Glide - and my wife almost flew off the back. She was pretty freaked out. I haven't had this problem ever with the Penske's.
They also improve the overall ride quality of the bike (both my 2008 Street Glide and now my 2009 Road King). Howard's now got Ohlins for less than the Penske's - call him and ask him to recommend some shocks. You won't regret the call - he's a good guy. His number is 954-588-4503.
