I just pour in 32 oz. like the manual states. The chain (at the lower end) picks it all up and distributes. Do not overfill.

Thank you all for the input. The bike was level when I filled it, but judging from your responses you can overfill by filling thru the clutch cover and inspection cover. Thanks again. I'll drain and start over.

I have a 2004 road king. I changed the primary chain oil today for the first time . The manual said the oil capacity is 32 oz. Mine took twice that 64oz.

Smart move Todd, 9 out of 10 times if you follow the manual you can't go wrong

Interesting! I'm assuming you're using Automatic Transmission Fluid in your primary? I'm not sure if it's a good idea in the long run. Plus, the dealer can void your warranty if something happens. I would stick with oils that are designed for HD, than experimenting with unproven products. Just my two cents.

i have never tried filling mine, i just dump a quart of synthetic ATF in there. the ATF is formulated for clutch contact though very little. the ATF i feel will cool the clutch housing better than a heavier fluid. fluid is a coolant and a lubricant.

I quit using the derby cover to change the fluid after reading several posts here and having to take that rear floorboard off to get at it. Unless I want to look at the clutch I just dump 32 oz. through the primary chain inspection cover and button it up. I am using Mobile 1 10-40 Dino oil in the primary, works great.

Forget about the owners manual. I just recieved the DVD "Fix my hog", and in the video they do not refer to the fill point. Instead they simply say to "add 32 onuces of primary fluid". The fluid can be added thru the derby cover or chan inspection hole. It makes no difference. Just a note. During the video the guy doing/ showing how to change fluids is using Golden Spector oil. That's what I use in my VTX1800 per the advice of a motorcross racer I know. I do however use Amsoil in the RKC/

This is one of the reasons that I enjoy this board, just never thought to use the chain inspection cover to put in the
Primary fluid. What a pain to put it in thru the derby cover Arrrrr ! Also while your putting in your new fluid you can check the
chain for tension and wear. [sm=goodidea.gif]

If you install an M6, you will not worry about the chain anymore.

Todd, if you're using the Clymer Service Manual instructions and associated picture of how far to fill the primary case oil, I believe it is in error. 32 oz is correct. Do not pay too much attention to the picture and instructions if you're using the Clymer Manual. They got the capacity correct but provided conflicting instructions and visuals.
