I think some of you guys are missing the boat! Changing the air filter element without opening up the exhaust is not going to make much of a difference in flow through the engine in my opinion, it doesn't on a car or truck unless the element is super restrictive.
Just my 2 cents worth but I don't think changing to a replacement K&N (not high flow back etc.) is causing your heat problems. You may be getting a little better airflow but not enough to cause a real heat issue. If you go to a complete high flow system you will definitely need a tuner !!
Exactly! I called K&N and they said the same thing. They said there is no way you would need to do anything with the fuel management system if all you are replacing is the stock filter for a K&N in the stock airbox.

As others mentioned, increasing the airflow leans your mixture. Fuel is the number 1 source of cooling in air cooled engines, there's where your increased heat is coming from.
The '07 & up closed loop ECMs feature Adaptive Learning. The Adaptive Fuel settings can be reset by a dealer using the Digital Technician II compensating for the increased air flow and restoring your original A/F ratios. Don't let them talk you into a Stage 1 download... the Stage 1 calibrations no longer produce any changes in A/F mixtures, they only raise the rev limiter to 6200 and that's it.

so any ideas how much they are going to charge for this little adjustment? why not just add some XIEDS?
I can't speak with any knowledge about changes to the ECM for '09 and '10 models as to the effects of the HD download, but with my '07 and '08, the addition of a high flow filter such as the K&N and combined with the HD download gave me a noticeable increase in response and performance. I think it's a cheap upgrade and a good first step towards a total Stage 1 upgrade when you get the cash for new mufflers.
Like reported before you need a fuel management system. I went with a Terminal Velocity 3. It is a plug and forget system. It remaps the ECM for you every couple of seconds and no dyno needed and no guess work on settings. Pull your plugs and I bet they are as white as chalk. MIne were and after installing the TV3 they will turn a nice tan color.
