A friend of mine just got back from Sturgis. He wore his tires past the wear bars on the ride, so he rode somewhat cautiously on the return trip. I bumped into him at the shop when he was getting new tires on his scoot. On the way home from the shop, he was feeling so confident with the new rubber that he took a curve a few miles form his house a bit more aggressively. Bang! Scuffed paint, scratched chrome, and the need for another tube of neosporin.

Glad everyone is OK. Makes me think a lot more about the gear one wears.

Were you wearing helmets, and if so what types?

Armoured gear? Boots, gloves, etc?

As you so eloquently described, accidents do happen.

I usually wear a carbon fiber helmet - I did not have it on. Two of the others were in helmets and leather coats.
I was in short sleeves jeans and Tach 5:11 boots. I barely got road rash - a little on my forearm. I slid 63 feet - I attribute the lack of road rash to the slick surface - I actually pushed my hands into the road attempting to stop sliding, I wanted to stop sliding and check on my wife and avoid the oncoming lane that I was sliding towards. I had only three little scratches on my left hand. One of the metal eyelets on my left boot looks like a grinder was taken to it.

Our group had a discussion earlier in the day about riding bells. I'm a believer, we all walked away!

Glad everyone is OK. Was any one on a newer ride with anti lock brakes? So far skidding has been thing of the past for me with my 09 FLTR even on wet roads. Still cautious though

Had a similar thing happen at Sturgis 1998, where it rained for 3˝ of the 4 days we were there. On a stretch of wet road near Devil's Tower my RK started fishtailing for no reason, and I just kept off the brakes and held a straight course to ride it out, as did a buddy behind me. Another rider or two weren't so lucky and ended up in the ditch, appearently with no injuries. Never went back to figure out why it was so slick, but it was only for a short distance, maybe 20-30 ft.

Another friend hit some hydraulic fluid on a dry road and went down, fortunately at very slow speed with only some scrapes to the bike and his jeans. It's out there and we must be ready for it.
