Recently got a 2010 Ultra, I think the bike is absoultely fantastic in everyway, except one. The seat is horrible. This problem is further compounded by the fact that my wife really likes the passenger seat (most of the riding done on the bike is with both of us). I really need to do something though, the rider seat is nearly unbearable after about an hour. I have read threads about sending my seat off to be reshaped, have memory foam or gel put in it, or I need to buy a _____ (insert seat name). I serioulsly don't know what to do.
I had a 2007 ultra and I thought the seat was fine, the wife, not so much...
I sat on a CVO Ultra with the hammock seat and it felt ok to me, she wasn't sure for her. I wish there was a way to test ride a seat for about 300 miles.
I have a horse and when I bought two new saddles both of them came with a trial period where I could return them if I wasn't happy. Why doesn't the motorcycle world do this. I hate to spend 500-700.00 only to find out one of us isn't happy. We are riding from Virginia to Daytona next month and I have to do something before then...
Try the HD Sundowner seat. I think it lists for 300.00 and you should be able to buy online for 20% off that. Had one on my Road King and now the Ultra and have done several 600-800 mile days this year with no problems at all. The bride thinks it's good too and she has done 600+ days on it and done really well also. Others have recommended this seat also and for the money I don't think you can find any better. Good luck!
Good luck, that seems to be the age old question. I have tried several manufactuers over the years and have not yet been 100% satisfied. Corbin was too hard for me, I know give it sometime and it will break in, well it didn't. The best feeling seat I have tried lately was a Mustang, but on the '09 Ultra it moved me closer to the tank. I am 6'2 and needed to be moved back if any thing, so that didn't work. The best was on my '05 Ultra and I had the seat rebuilt by a local aircraft interior shop, with new high tech foam etc, but that took awhile. It is just trial and error, and mostly error so far.
Could not stand my 06 UC seat so I bought a Sundowner. Could ride farther but was still not great. I use highway pegs and change my position every 20-30 minutes and that seems to do the trick for me. I now have a 09 Ultra and with the h-w pegs have not felt the need to buy a new seat. Doing OK with this stock seat.
We looked at the Sundowner too (for our '06), but the passenger seat was narrower than stock, so I don't think I could explain to my wife that it would be better for her. This last weekend we ordered a 2-up Mustang seat w/ rider backrest. FWIW, the dealer said we should keep the box and wrapping 'cuz we had a 10-day trial period. Maybe start out w/Mustang options so even if it's a dealer credit type of trial period, you're not out the $$.
I have a 2009 Ultra. I wasn't crazy about the stock seat so I started looking for a replacement. I decided on the Harley road zeppelin seat, but it wasn't available for the newer bikes at the time. My next choice was the Russell Day-long. I read a lot about that seat and didn't see any negative comments so I that's the direction I took. I've put back-to-back 800 mile days on that seat without getting a sore back side. Comfort-wise, it's great. Beware that if you're short, this isn't the seat for you. I'm 5'10'' with a 32" inseam, not tall but not short either, and I have to move forward on the seat when I stop in order to flat foot the bike and even then it's a stretch. One other thing about this seat is that you're not supposed to get it wet which is a pain for a touring bike because, if you ride enough, you're bound to get caught in a downpour at some point in time. I have a rain cover for it that you can ride on, but I'd rather not have to deal with it.
Harley now has a version of the road zeppelin that fits the '08 and newer bikes. As much as I like the Russell for comfort, I ordered one of those today. My hope is that it will be as comfortable as the Russell seat, but not suffer from the things I mentioned above. We'll see...
I have a 09 Ultra which I think is the same seat as the 10 and it does suck. I ordered a smooth mustang touring seat but it is not here yet so no report on it. The Mustang does allow you to keep a wide rear passenger seat, to keep the wife happy. My wife has a Mustang on here Deluxe and likes it a lot.
I did have a Sundowner on a Road King which I liked but my wife did not care for it all that much she did say it was much better than the stock seat.
I have heard good things about Mean City Cycles seat mod if you want to look at them.
I put a sundowner on my 08 street glide , wife and Myself both happy . And If you watch the HD classified you can get a deal on one . If you don't like it they sell quick unload it and you can have your stock one done at Mean city . From what I read here they do a fine job .
I have an 09 Classic. I am 5'8" with a 29" inseam. I put the Mustang 2 piece touring seat with a backrest on mine. The 2 piece is 1" lower and 2" narrower than the stock seat. The passenger Pillion that I bought was the 13". I rode to Sturgis this year with the longest day being just under 700 miles and my a&& was fine. My wife says the seat is as comfortable if not more than the factory seat.
I just went through the same issues with my 09 stock seat. Tried 3 HD seats and either I liked them or wife didn't. So finally found a guy that put 2 high quality gel pads in the stock seat and we couldn't be happier. All for $230.
