I just bought a new '06 Ultra two weekends ago. From my previous Harley experience with my '95 FLHT...84,000miles...I learned at least 2 things about myself and the bike......
1st.....I'm tired of loud pipes....been there, done that
2nd....stock performance leaves a lot to be desired, but high performance usually means poor durability....lesson learned from buying 2 hopped up motors in those 84,000 miles!
I want a mild performance upgrade and I want to keep the noise down....I know kind of counter productive
This is what I'm having done as I write:
K&N air cleaner
S&S 510g cams
EFI download as required
Stock pipes
Anyone running a similar setup? Knowing that I don't want LOUD pipes, will it be a mistake to use the stock pipes with this mild upgrade? Recommendations or....gasp!....opinions?
Before you do the cam route, try the sampson rolled thunder slip-ons. Not too loud. I was at the Indiana HOG rally this weekend and may have been one of the quietest bikes there. Do the air box, the download and the mufflers. half the cost of cams, and, she'll go as fast as you need it to go, plenty of pull.
I just pick up an 05 Ultra this weekend with Stage 1 and Vance and Hines slip ons. Not really loud at all, Dyno data 73 HP 78 Torque. I am with you though, I hate loud pipes. I would rather listen to XM.
I agree; stock pipes will put the kibash on anything else you do. But as has been said, there are a lot of pipes out there that will actually help performance and aren't too loud at all.
You should be able to accomplish what you want fairly easily.
D&D has recently released some "Police Edition" (quiet) slipons. I have never seen anything but awesome products from D&D ~ as far back as the first set of pipes I bought from them in '81 or '82.
On the cams.... there are several ways to get what you want, but the 510's really "like" a little more than stock compression ( more like 9.5 ~ 9.7:1). Take a good long look at the Andrews 26G cams. They are a bit milder than the 510's, but are designed for low end torque on baggers w/stock compression ratio. I have used them in the past and recently installed a set in PipeDADDY's 05 FRTRI. Using only Andrews 26's, 95" flat top pistons, bored out stock jugs, D&D 2" slip-ons, and a Power Commander, he got 98 ft/lbs of torque that is VERY rideable and FUN to ride.
Check out his dyno chart in the bagger dyno thread....
Karl - I just noticed you're from Ft. Worth... You should run over to D&D and talk to them. Ask if you can hear a set of those new Police Edition slip-ons....
THere's also a GREAT dyno tuner near by ~ Sabin Performance, in Dallas... Ask for Jim Sabin
Hey Phil, thanks for the suggestion for the D&D exhaust. I ended up going by there today and I bought a set of their new Interceptor Police pipes.
I was very impressed with the build quality....solid stainless steel, polished to a chrome like finish. They will be able to be polished over and over as the need arises down the road....no pun intended The interior packing looks very substantial and I'll be able to have them repacked if needed.
I wasn't able to hear them on a bike, but I took them on their word that they are a little more throaty than stock, but not as loud as SE's.
I'll be putting them on when I get the bike back from the cam and AC upgrade. Then it's on to get the EFI remapped.
I've got an 06 Ultra with Stage 1, Rinehart S.O's. I went with the ECI download and it's a waste of money. Take that money, get a SERT, and have it dynoed. My Ultra dynoed at 78 HP and 84 FPT. The Rineharts are a little loud but only when I want them to be. NOW it's a fun bike.
I would recommend S&S SPO mufflers. I love them. They offer excellent performance but also quiet exhaust sound. They are only slightly louder than stock pipes and have a really coool deep sound. Great performance for quiet neighborhoods such as mine!
