I asked Avon about tyre sizes and they recommend using an MU when riding fully loaded a lot. It has a slightly higher load rating than an MT.

This question pops up quite often! It seems on older bikes the amount of clearance varies from bike to bike. Some can fit an MU with no problem. In my case (1990 FLHS) I had to remove the rubber curtain on my belt guard to get the tyre in without rubbing against anything. I have about 3/16" clearance between belt and tyre.

An MU is not only wider than an MT, but also slightly bigger in diameter, although I cannot tell the difference when riding my bike. When touring fully loaded I reckon we come in at around 1200 pounds and I must say I feel happier with the bigger tyre.

You want the MU on the rear. Higher load rating.

Quite right. I should have made it clear in my post above that I also have an MT up front and MU on the rear.

This was what I was afraid of. I got a screamin' deal from Dennis Kirk, so the rear tire is on the way. I went with the MT this time, as I know it fits, and I've got a nice little trip planned south to Idaho and Utah the end of Sept. Didn't want to get the tire and find out it wouldn't work and screw up my trip. Thanks guys for the input. I did learn some good info.

It could be because they don't have "Harley-Davidson" molded into the sidewall like the D402's are. HD will definitely get their cut if their name is on anything.
