If you don't want the down time, buy a takeoff and have it painted so you just have to do the swap and sell your old one. I put an 08 inner on my 07 so I would have the 4 holes for newer style air deflectors on the side. Had to have a hole cut for the throttle cable, but it is marked on the back of the fairing and easy to have done when it was painted. Pretty simple to change out if you have the maint manual.
buy the manual and IF you have the funds... buy the fairing you want and do the swap all at the same time.... less of a chance of forgetting where everything goes.. another suggestion, when the time comes to put it all back, find a buddy with a batwing and have their bike parked next to yours with his outter fair OFF - then you have something to look at...
If you have a camera, take pictures of everything from every angle and place all hardware remove in ziplock freezer bags. When I tore my bike apart to repair it from a deer strike I took pictures of every bolt, wire tie wire clamp etc and placed the picture in the zip lock bag along with written notes and order of dis-assembly. Maybe overkill, but I wanted to ensure my bike went back together exactly as it came from the factory. Even after 6 weeks, I was able to put my bike together with out any guessing or complications.
The repair manual does not state to remove the radio, but I found the new fairing went on much easier with the radio removed. You will need allen wrenches with the ball tips to get to the bolts.
sharpie, camera, and masking tape are your best friend. label everything and take lots of pictures. took me about 4 hours on a saturday by myself. its well worth it. good luck
