I just purchased 12.5 Wild 1 Chubbys for my 2010 Street Glide and would like some input from anyone who has made the conversion from the stock bars to an ape hanger style in the 12-14 in tall variety. Is the kit from Novello the way to go, or should I look at something else?
I did the WO513's 8.5" Mini Apes and I used the Novello extension kit. The same would apply to your situation.
If I remember correctly, the instructions don't mention the use of solder. They only state to connect the pins into the "female" end and then use a piece of heat shrink to insulate them.
I strongly suggest to solder the connection. This serves two purposes; one, to ensure good electrical connectivity and second, to ensure that the joint does not come apart when you pull the wire through the bar.
I then put a long piece of heat shrink over all wires, once the extensions were in place. This made it easier to pull the entire loom through the bars.
