How does your EVO sound?
This is a question for the precious few on this board that are still riding evo motors- How much noise is normal for this motor? I've never had a Harley before, so i don't know what is normal and what's not. Its a 1993 police model. I get a tapping on my evo, kind of like a sewing machine sound. It doesn't sound terrible or really loud, but I can here it at most speeds, seems to make a little more noise when its hotter. I alway thought hydraulic lifters were supposed to be pretty quiet. Bike runs great, the noise isn't progressively getting worse or anything. Kind of reminds me of the noise my air cooled vw motors used to make, but they had solid lifters. I cleaned the tappet screen, it looked good so the valve train should be getting plenty of oil. Should I worry?

This is too subjective a question. Everyone's idea of noisy is gonna be different. You never even mentioned what pipes ur running. I have V&H Longshots (modified) with no baffles, so it's fairly difficult to hear the engine over the exhaust note.

If you have a fairing or windshield you will hear more to end noise. I don't remember my Evo bikes making any mor noise than my twinkie's. My advice would be to take it to somebody in the know if you have concerns for a listen.

All Harleys have a certain amount of valvetrain noise. The type/brand of oil you use will sometime make it louder, i.e. syn 3 has been reported as making more valvetrain noise. My EVO makes more noise than my TC, but it is stroked. From what you are describing it sounds like you are probably hearing normal sounds of a harley.

I'm running hooker turndowns, they aren't crazy loud or anything. I do have a windshield, and it does make easy to hear any noises. My timing cover was slightly loose, the rattle was driving me crazy until I found it. I guess I won't worry about this valve train noise unless it becomes worse or I see other problems.
