I was wondering if, sense they introduced the current style Road Glide, did Harley ever make a Ultra Classic (Tour Glide Ultra Classic ) version of it? I am wanting a full on Ultra Classic bike, but with the "shark" fairing instead of the more common "Bat wing" style fairing.... If Harley did build this bike, what model year was it made, or am i stuck building my own Ultra out of a 2009 Road Glide? Thanks in advance for any help with this.
The FLT was first introduced in 1979 with the Shovelhead motor. The FLTC (Tour Glide Classic) was changed to the EVO motor with the 1985 model year. Some were sold with EVO motors mid year 1984. The first year of an Ultra model was the 1989 FLTCU Ultra Tour Glide. Three Tour Glide models (Tour Glide, Tour Glide Classic, and Ultra Tour Glide) went to the 1996 Model. All Tour Glide models were discontinued in the 1997 model year. In 1998 the FLTR Road Glide was introduced with a redesigned Fairing. That was also the last year of the EVO on all Touring Models. In the 1999 models the Twin Cam was introduced. The Softail models had the EVO in the 1999 model year but went to the TC in 2000.
There was just a FLTR Road Glide until the 2010 model year. Then the FLTR was discontinued and the FLTRX was introduced.
The CARB (California Air Resources Board) requires all motor vehicles be tested and approved before they can be sold in the state of California. Harley had the FLTRX and FLTRU tested and approved for sale in the state of California in the 2010 model year. This does not mean that there will be a FLTRU model sold in the state of California. Just that there could be one. Harley tests many different models with the CARB. They have listed models before that they did not sell. This is to keep their plans from becoming know to the public. There may be an "Ultra" model in the future. Or there ma not be one. I also had two Ultra Glides. I lost my latest Ultra to a Left Turn Pick Up in May of this year. I had an FXRT and loved the Frame mount fairing. I was hoping for an Ultra Road Glide. I waited for the 2010 model year to see if there was going to be one. There was not and I didn't like the new Road Glide Custom. So I bought a 2009 model and am putting the Ultra stuff on to make it a Touring Model.
I will not have my money to buy until about MAY of 2010, so maybe I will get lucky and it will be a mid year release... if not will look for a 2009 and start building it to a ULTRA.... thanks for the information.
