Default question about PCV autotune

I was able to add the autotune 02 sensors to my PCV that already had a base map. I enabled the autotune checking the boxes in the pcv software. is there anything else I need to do other than just ride off into the sunset? or are there other setting I need to change before it is complete. I also noticed there is a check box dealing with taking samples at certain engine temps, should i have enabled that as well?

Thanks

I would connect a laptop, start the bike, and make sure the AFR rates are changing. Here is a link that has a lot of good tips and lessons learned from the AT and PCV installs. But once you have the AT connected and enabled you are correct, then ride.

I then look at the trim values, if you had a good base map, the AT tables should not deviate much from the base map.

Luke's advice is good. Watch the AFR readout in the software, but it will show "99.9" (or similar) for about a minute before the O2 sensors are brought up to temperature. If you see AFR's change as described here go take a ride, turn off the engine, re-attach to the computer, and check the trim tables. There should be some changes unless the map is perfect, which is doubtful. If it is a Fuel Moto map it will likely be very close and you should see only minor changes, 1-2% max in my case but only in a few cells. If the changes are higher don't worry about it, as it only shows AT is doing its job.

I would use the Target AFR's Fuel Moto used as a starter, then ride the bike and judge the performance increase and probably gas-mileage decrease. If you don't like the mileage you can tweak the target-AFR values, but that's another topic.

Also, while the computer is connected and the engine running, make sure the Throttle Position readout shows "0%" at idle. If not, go to Power Commander Tools > Calibrate > Throttle Position and change the values as follows:

Closed throttle 0.700 (Minimum Voltage)
Open throttle 4.300 (Maximum Voltage)

These values are for '08-'09 only, BTW. There's a different procedure for older bikes and I don't know the specs for '10 models.

Can I ask for a short lesson. If you get a map from Fuel Moto set up for your bike. Do you really need the autotune? If as you stated you might see 1 to 2% change is that going to be that noticable when you ride. I've always been a SERT guy but am thinking I might buy the PCV. Thanks

You are correct, if you have the PCV and map from FM, chances are your map is going to be very close. Those of us that add the AT, are planning for future changes and we like to monitor the adjustments made by AT. I really liked the AT and the adjustments it made to my 08 Road King. I plan to add it to my new street glide as soon as the PCV and AT are available.

I agree with Luke. FM has it covered with stock cams and most mufflers and AC's available, but they don't have a map for every conceivable combo of cams, heads, mufflers, etc. So if you plan on doing upgrades like these the AT is a good idea, IMO.

I installed the PCV w/ autotune on my Ultra Classic yesterday. I uploaded the map closest to my configuration and went for a ride. At first, I was very disappointed in the performance....bike just felt real doggy. Wife and I rode about 175 miles and by the end of the day the bike was running MUCH better. Throttle response was crisp and she was pulling hard. Today, I jumped on it for a short solo ride (the way I usually ride) and I immediately felt a huge improvement. AutoTune does work and it works well. I haven't hooked the laptop back up to it to see what changes it's made but I will this week. Good thread, thanks for the link.
