The bag lids will hit one of the bolts on each side from the docking kit. Over time it will cause damage.
You can use the stop kit to keep that from happening. Or you can use the magnetic bolt covers that Harley also sells. One more option is to find rubber covers at a hardware store and push the on the bolts.

Yup. I bought the hinge stop kit for my 09 RKC and found that it prevented the bags from opening wide enough for me so I took it off. I ordered the chrome covers to use instead.
KBrown, don't let me totally dissuade you from the hinge stop kit. You may find that you're happy with the amount you're able to open the bags. Just keep in mind that it is substantially reduced from stock. I didn't like it.
Yes I've got some nicks in the edge of my saddle bag lids (can't really see them unless you open the lid and lay it open) from the bolts. If you don't get the stop kit just be gentle when you swing the lid into place to close it cuz it hits the tip of the bolt and will nick the paint over time if this happens repeatedly. I didn't know this til it was too late. Not visible so I'm not gonna worry about it myself at this point.
PS: I've got the same set-up: 4-point kit and backrest and luggage rack. Very handy and much used on road trips. I've also got a leather tourpak in a box ready to use just need to get the detachable mount for it before I can use it.
I just purchased a 2009 Road King Classic and am putting the 4 point docking kit on it as well as the back rest and luggage rack.
There is a part that is new to the 2010 parts & accessories catalog on page 373. It is part number 90580-09, Saddlebag Hinge Stop Kit.
A couple questions: Do any of you know what this is used for and is it really necessary??
Thank you!
It is if you don't want dents in your leather saddlebags.
With that being said, I bought the kit and used everything EXCEPT the stop plates. It comes with extended bushings and extended bag pins and the stop plates. Since I have the docking kit covers, just the bushings and pins were good enough for me. The bushings push the bag out just a little bit which is why you need to use the extended pins too. It's like 1/16th of an inch farther out.
The leather on the edge of one of my saddlebag lids is torn from the bolt on the docking hardware. I think I remember throwing away some small pieces of tape or rubber or something. Guess I should have paid more attention
