Nope, went directly with the template. Just go to the arrows. I almost drilled the template where it shows the size of the drill bits to use, then re-read everything and noticed where they wanted you to drill.
It was a little scary drilling into the fairing, but just take your time and do it right, no problems. Drilled the pilot hole on the inside of the outer fairing. Then drilled the required size holes on the outside of the outer fairing, so as not to burr up the outer fairing. Just had mine painted about month or so before doing the mirrors.
I'm a very wide shouldered guy. I have a big problem with the OEM mirrors on my Ultra. I can't see past elbows without tucking them in when I need to. I was hoping the fairing mounted ones would eliminate that problem. They appear to be a little farther out than the handlebar mounts.
Any thoughts from any other lard butts out there?
On both my 01, and now on my 09 Ultra, I use both the faring mounts and extended handlebar mirrors. I use the faring mirrors as wide-angle to see cars coming up beside me in the blind spot, and the long mirrors to see past both our wide shoulders.
It does not look as cool, but provides a great all around view, and in MHO is a good safety value.
