They should replace the starter using this service bulletin, they did mine. Are you still in warranty? Also do the SE compensator sprocket, best money you will ever spend on your bike.
I had the same noise in my 08. Took it to the dealer and even though they heard the noise, the starter passed all test and they couldn't do anything about it except let it blow.
The dealer did tell me that since I had the PCIII they couldn't do any further testing.
Meanwhile; a friend ask about my starting habits, just as instructed by the dealer, I turn on the ignition, turn on the run switch and wait for all the bells and whistles to go off (about 5 seconds).
Now I haven't researched this but, he said with a Power Commander you are supposed to turn on the ignition hit the run switch and start immediatley. By using this method, the bike starts 95% of the time with no extra noise.
After my 103" Stage 2 install I started having starting problems. The dealer replaced the starter clutch twice which helped for a few miles. The next time they replaced the starter and clutch pack as the ring gear was damaged. They also determined that the compensator was worn to out of spec and replaced it as well. I paid the difference and they ugraded to the high torque starter and SE compensator. It is truly like riding a different bike now. Oh, yeah, I also added the automatic compression releases.
