Quick and easy temporary remedy would be to install one of those heat deflectors which go under the seat and out both sides to shield your thighs. It'll give you time to decide exactly what upgrades you want to do for a permanent fix. Like this one, there are many others tho...

On my '08 the only thing that helped was "True Duel Header Pipes" It rounted the pipes differently enough that I could leave my right foot on the Floorboards..........and it lost that rear pipe on the right side also and that helped keep my thigh from burning up.

I bought the Vance & Hines True Duel Header Pipes. You can use any mufflers even stock if you want.

True Duals:

Very interesting, thanks for the info. I would have never thought different cams would cool down an engine but I'm not an expert mechanic. I have an 09 Ultra with stage 1, PCV, HD Premium oil cooler and it's still very hot on the right side when I ride in the city. I'll look into these cams.

Try FuelMoto and Jamie and get a PC-V...it really cooled my bike.

The true duals would help a lot along with a SERT . The stock bikes run a cross over pipe so most of the exhaust still comes out the right side of the bike very little heat goes out the left so slip ons do very little for the problem.

I have a 2008 Ultra Classic as well. Last winter I put in a 103" Stage II with 255 cams, High flow SE heads, SE air breather, and supertrapp slip-ons. Before taking delivery I had them install a Harley premium oil cooler. With the build comes additional heat. So this summer I replaced the Harley oil cooler with a JAGG 10-row oil cooler, and added a Baker +1 oil pan, increasing oil capacity by 1 qt. I have an engine oil temp gague with a sender that connects to the oil pan, so the readings should be pretty good. My temps now run between 190 and 220, depending on temperature, traffic and speed. Before the change in oil cooler and with stock oil pan, temps were between 220 and 235. I run Amsoil 20-50 synthetic, as Harley syn3 is a blend and not a pure synthetic. I also added the harley mid-frame heat deflectors and they seem to help as well. Stay away from fans. I had one and it lasted less than a year with minimum use. I hope this helps.

Having done much research on this (my '08 Ultra was frying me and the O/L) I did the following;

SERT (Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner) The bikes come from the factory set to run very lean in order to reduce emissions by EPA mandate. Adding the Race Tuner (now called "SEST") and having the tuner tech "richen up" the fuel/air mixture cooled the engine down. The tech put the bike on the dyno and fine tuned it to make sure it was perfect.

SE Intake = More air in

Rush Mufflers = more air out

Other fuel management systems such as Power Commander work well for this. I chose the SERT because I didn't want a 3rd party "box" installed as a potential single point of failure. A SERT/SEST reprograms the Electronic Control Module (ECM) versus fooling the ECM as other products. This is mostly a personal choice issue.

This machine is now about as perfect as it could be. The heat issues are completely gone.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions or concerns.

Nobody said oil. A good synthetic Mobile 1, Redline, Amsoil will lower heat. I also have been useing Redline Tranny V Twin. Ethanol seems to raise temp in V twins and syn 3 doesen't have the detergents needed to clean carbon. To counteract this I've been adding some Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas.
We have had a cool, wet summer here in Pennsylvania, but I am sure the above has greatly lowered temps. Next step is Jamie and a Fuelmoto stage 1.

I agree. I put in Amsoil Synthetic at the 1000 mile service on my 2010 Road King and I noticed a big difference in the heat factor. I had friends tell me this would happen, but didn't think there would be much of a change. The heat reduction is definitely noticeable.
