A leftover 09 gets my vote.

Retail on an '06 SG is $13.2k, so you'd have to decide if the chrome and other amenities are worth the extra money. That price ($17-18k) sounds way high to me for an '06. For me the TC96 engine is preferable because of its better low-end torque characteristics and improved alternator, cam, and oil-pump components.

As most here have said, I would go with finding a left-over '09 somewhere over a '10 model. I'm sure deals are everywhere, and I know that HD of Baton Rouge is paying sales tax on their remaining '09's. I don't know if that goes for out-of-state buyers, but since our sales tax is 9% it is a fairly attractive offer for LA residents. I'm sure they would deal one way or the other for anyone interested, though. I see nothing that would cause me to pick a '10 over an '09, and several things that work against the '10 for my taste, like the single exhaust and reduced lighting in the rear.

Shop harder on the '10 or left over '09 - dealers are hurting in many parts of the country and traveling to p/u the new bike may be worth it for the $$$ saved. You don't say what the 2006 model is (RK, EG Ultra, etc.), and the bling only has value if it's what you would do to the bike, but the price is high in today's used HD market.

I'd buy the new bike for all the same reasons previously stated.

I would go with a 09 or 2010 with a good warranty. You don't want to buy someone elses headache and if the bike has no warranty that is exactly what you could end up with. 17K - 18K is very high on an 06 anyway.
