Default replacing the strap for the tour pak with...

a air cyclinder automotive type rod? like one used for hatch backs or lift gates? was looking at some in auto zone the other day and started to wonder if its something to give a try? guess the size and mounting location would be the biggest issue but having a auto opening tour pak lid of sorts would be pretty cool.

any ideas on this?

youll have to match the rod to the weight of the tour pack or it will be way to stiff. but if u get it right it would be different.

Been thinking about replacing mine with a chain. I think someone makes a folding steel linkage that replaces the cable, can't remember where I saw them.

I think it's a cool idea, but.... I don't know how strong the stock latches are with alot of upward pressure. If you're riding down the eway at 75 mph and it pops open - well -you see where I'm going.....
Most automotive hoods and hatches have a secondary latch feature.

You can't just buy one from an autostore and hope it works. Think how heavy those hatchbacks and hoods are that the rod holds up. A buddy of mine used to design office chairs, and they used the same gas cylinders to control movement. Each one had to be pressurized for a specific task as well as sized for length. He designed a couple for me for the trunk of a street rod I was building, too cool, press a switch, and the trunk popped open. So, what I am saying is, yes, you can do it, but if you buy one too strong, it will tear your fiberglass apart, but if you get a 'weak' one it won't hold anything open, you need a correctly sized one and it will work fine. One thing to consider is how you reinforce your tourpack for the mount. When closed, the cylinder stays in a pressurized position, and has a lot of stored up energy, and you will need to brace the tourpack for that energy release when you open the top.

I lot of boat hatches us a spring that when the hatch is open the spring is straight. to close you just bend the spring and it would allow the hatch to close. Cheap simple and does the job.

The folding brace is sold by Eglide Goodies.

Here's the link to it.

It seems like a good idea. But, over time, it will wear out and it won't hold anymore. Then your TP lid comes slamming down. But, that shouldn't happen for a few years. Unless you are constantly in your tourpak.

I think it took a whole team of rocket scienctists to design the cable on the tour pack. I didn't have problems on my 05 EGC but the 09 you can't close the lid without pushing the cable aside or you close the lid on the cable
