Default Thoughts on this used bike

My buddy is getting the urge to ride. We looked at this bike, a 2002 Road King. It's injected, has true duals, some great sounding mufflers (don't know who's), Chrome front end, stage I, new rubber, and some assorted doo-dads. Mileage is 26,xxx

Owner is asking $10,500. I told my buddy to offer $10k even as an opening position. Its in good shape, and rides good. About the only thing I dont know about is do 2002 have cam chain tensioner wear issues?

Anyway, here is the bike. Tell me what you think..

Yeah, I'd consider tht a very good deal. Usually when you see any type of HD touring model at or near the 10K price range it has very high miles in the 50,000 + range and may be somewhat worn cosmetically.
Not sure about the 02's and cam tensioners but I have an 03 Road King Classic and not a lick of trouble. Plus I love Road Kings in general. Also as a side note the detach backrest and saddle bag top guard rails are worth a few bucks too.

Cam tensioners are a wear issue for that bike...with only 26K miles, they may be fine, they may need to be replaced. Replacing them isn't that big a deal, or upgrading to the newer style Hydraulic tensioners is an option as well (along with gear drive, etc etc etc). $10K looks like a good price, all things considered it looks clean (at least from the picture)

According to the AMA Motorcycle Black Book, the 2000 FLHR wholesale value is $7,275 in
clean condition and suggested retail is $9,780 so you are not out of the ballpark at all.
Happy negotiating!

Cam chain tensioners are definitely an issue on that bike. Find out if they have been checked, and if not get some more money off for the check, or ask him to have it done as they have been know to go anywhere between 15000 and 60000 with no set time. Getting the new cam plate and ahving it installed should run about $1300 or so, much cheaper if you do it yourself, but the ball is in your court with this one.

low miles for an 02 touring bike

looks like a real nice deal for 10 grand

just have the tensioners checked if you're worried and replace if necessary. screamin eagle hydro tensioner kit runs about a grand installed or just replace the stock spring ones for less, it's still a nice bike and should sell.

My 06 has 35000 on it and it's pretty much the same bike. I wouldn't want to take that for my bike

I have read on here before that the 2002 model year were the best ones to buy...........but I can't remember why.

Cam chain tensioners are an issue on all twin cam motors from '99 on..............they are a wear item that needs to be checked and replaced as needed. And while you are in there doing the tensioners, you should swap out the inner cam bearings for the Torrington B148's.

$10000 is a good price for that bike, might even try going $9000 or $9500 and work from there for a better deal.
