I want to thank everybody for their help!
Just to let you all know, we were on a ride yesterday and out of the blue the stereo started working! Figure that one out!

Water! I had my bike in the shop for a tire change and they washed it took a day before the CD would play again.

I'm pretty sure the mp3 player that goes on the bars would work on the older ones, it uses the Aux port if I remember right.

I just experienced the same issue with a '98 electra glide. Replaced the battery and when I went to first start the bike, I got the d1 code with a bunch of ones and zeros. Hit a few buttons and got bupkis. I couldn't even power off the radio. I ruled out fuses because the unit was still getting power. Called my local dealer and the service manager wasn't familiar with the issue. Checked on-line and didn't come up with any solutions. The second time I went to start the bike, code changed to d2 still with a bunch on ones and zeros. As I rode, a hit the power button and a few other buttons just for grins and still got nothing.

After about 30 miles I look down and see that the code has now changed to d5 and instead of ones and zeros I have a scrolling message with "firmware update" and something like "08-01-97" [probably when the bike was built]. This time when I press the power button the scrolling stops while my finger is on the button. I release the button and the scrolling starts again. I then press a few more buttons as I'm riding along [lo/dx, eject etc] and I see the message change to press the lo/dx button or any two buttons to reset the radio. So I did and the radio comes back. Yeah! I wish I could tell you the proper combination to replicate this but I was riding at the time and honestly I think whatever I did was just dumb luck.

Now the radio had been working before the battery failure. Battery was old, wouldn't hold a charge and went stone dead. I had just washed the bike, nothing unique, no pressure washer, no jet stream to the dash, just a regular hose and sponge. Heck I've ridden in heavier storms without any issues. I figured that when I had installed the battery, it sparked a little and maybe that had something to do with it even though the radio was off.

In any case, it seems that it just needed to cycle through itself and have some monkey press it's buttons a few times to get going again. I hope this helps someone else who may experience this in the future.
