just got back from a ride. its 86 out. and im ridin a 94 ultra classic. the oil temp was 144 when I got home. After years of ridin a old sporty, and ridin friend rk's fatboys, and lowriders,,, I dont think ive ever gotten such heat off the motor. Do I need to remove my lowers? or is this a acceptable temp? Ive heard the electraglides are thigh burners.. and just want others opinion
Sounds like you did not let it warm up. Usually takes 10-15 min for the temp gauge to read.
Cruising downtown Las Vegas yesterday in 109 deg my Oil Pan temp was 260. Got it on the freeway at 85 and it was 240. Ran most of the way home today at 85-90 in 85 deg and my oil pan was 230. Cool evenings in the 60's and my temp will be 190-220 depending on how I ride. I've got almost 21,000 miles on my 05 Ultra and it runs smooth. Have not had any problems. Switched to SYN3 at 10,000 miles.
I keep my lowers on and have "no more fried thighs".
maybe the dipstick is a pos? it read 144 after about a hour of in town ridin.. about 35mph. feels alot hotter to. neighbor has one of those heat guns that reads temp. maybe time to swing by his garage. thanks/
The only time I experienced the temperature and riding conditions you are talking about was during December for a Toys For Tots run, and the outside temp was about 25 degrees...but even then I think the oil temp was somewhere sbetween 160-180 degrees.
I installed an oil temp gage before a 2k trip this last weekend(oil cooler ended up on back order) just to test before and after. My set-up with duals and synthetic oil was suprisingly hot-200 running around,220 normal highway,240 pushing it and it would hit 300 degrees pushing the 9,000 ft passes at the low speed stuff. Now I'm excited to see the difference when I get my oil cooler.
Yeah, 144 sounds pretty low. I had the LCD digital gauge from Harley on my Wide Glide and it got close to 300 degrees on a couple of occasions while traveling along Route 66 in Arizona. Even in Wisconsin it averaged somewhere in the low 200's on most summer days.
Evos don't run as hot as twincams, But I don't think it is that much difference. I ride both and it's a big difference betewwen my evo dyna and my twincam RK but I have not ever checked either one for the temp. I just keep the oil changed regularly and try to avoid stop and go traffic as much as possible.
