Default Passenger floorboard inserts problem

I'm in the process of installing some skull inserts. The directions are kind of vague. I did it exactly like they say but I can't get the outside of the inserts to set, the inside near the hinge point is right in place but the outside is supposed to set on two little square studs but I can't get them to set correctly. Is there a trick??? By the way they are the swept wing style floorboards in case that makes a difference. Thanks for any help you can give me!!!

Sounds like the rubber dowel pins didn't pop into the mating holes correctly.
