This summer purchased some Redline V Twin for the tranny. Price to ship standard so I also bought some Redline primary oil. Been very happy with my clutch preformance since. 07 RKC.

Seriously? You'd put ATF in your manual transmission on your car? Worst advice I've seen here I think.

That's crap about staying syn. I was running syn and wasn't really happy with the feel of the clutch. Switched back to Formula+ and am much happier with the feel.

As a side note, I don't have any more clunk when shifting from neutral to first after I start the engine since the switch. As always, FWIW and YMMV.

You could have a stator going down. Not that common anymore but when they burn up it makes the primary fluid smell really really bad. You could also have a clutch cable hanging up.
Many here use ATF in the primary. It works well, can be found almost anywhere, and it's cheap. Cheap enough to change out every time you service your bike as I do plus this application (the primary) is what ATF was designed for.
Keep these three things in mind: motor oil in the motor, gear lube in the transmission and ATF in the primary. Use the correct lube for the application.

+1 on the Redline Primary and trans, I was having a little trouble with my clutch pulling when at a red light. Put this stuff in and adjusted the clutch and everything including finding neutral much better. Have put it in a friends and he loves it also. Maybe save a few bucks w ATF but you only have to change it once a season so why not use stuff designed for MC wet clutch.

+1 Check the stator......can cause burnt smell in fluid.
Primary Fluid Change....

You could also check your tranny fluid....overfull could cause slippage....don't forget to check level in upright position.....

Hopefully it's a simple fix....never fun when bikes not running good.....

First, Royal Purple is an excellent synthetic engine oil, but I wouldn't use it in the primary because it is very slick and contains above-average amounts of moly (~250ppm). That's good for the engine, bad for the primary and can cause clutch slippage. The primary doesn't need a high-tech oil, and any 10w-40, 20w50, etc. fossil engine oil or ATF will do fine. I use Castrol GTX 20w50, $3.50 at Wal-Mart, and at 33k my clutch disks, primary chain, tensioner are in fine shape and wearing well, and the clutch action is perfect. Also, I would change at 5k intervals, as it does quickly accumulate clutch material in normal use.

HD Formula+ primary/tranny oil is okay for the primary, but IMO very over-priced at ~$6.50/qt. I would not use it in the tranny, opting instead for an 85w140 or similar viscosity gear oil.

Some cars do have ATF in the manual trans . The Borg Warner T5 used in TVR's &Cosworths in Europe and I believe the Mustang use ATF dexron 11. Think about it autos have epicyclic gears in them.
all the oil in the primary does is lubricate the chain and bearing in the clutch hub.
