I do my own.
Hell, I even disassemble it to the frame...have it painted...put it back together.
Build my own, and others, motors.

No, I don't have any type of mechanic degrees, auto or cycle.

I'm just an idiot with a Snap-On ratchet and a bunch of sockets.
OH...I have an oil drain pan, too!

I'm a machine head

Knowing everything about your bike, car, truck, etc.and being able to work on it is half the fun!

It does require an investment in tools(I LOVE tools).

I'm not just talking basic hand tools..........

Your going to need some diagnostic "tools" as well.

For those that consider a tool box to be something that you can carry in one hand, you might want to take it to a shop for anything other than fluid changes.

It's not about the money saved.

It has more to do with your desire to be able to handle EVERYTHING that could go wrong!

Some people enjoy making things work..............

Some just WANT it to work............

Some people need mechanics and some don't!

I'll leave it up to you to decide were you fit in.

There's nothing wrong with taking it to the shop.

Sometimes I feel like the ones that do are much smarter than me because they have more time to do other things!!

I am right there with you. After I rebuilt three sportbikes, I figure I can pretty much do anything now.

+1 on the $60 Service Manual!
+1 on the Fix My Hog for Touring DVDs
+1 on only having the first service done at the dealer
+1 to suggesting that an owner should only do what they're comfortable of doing and not overextending their knowledge base and skills where it really might be
+1 to all the positive replies and no real negative ones (What did happen to this board after I left for abit? @ssclowns are abundant these days!)

So that's about a +5 or so! Army Sarge...I'mm only up at Bragg...IM me or others here and we'd be more than happy to help ya through this!

Ride Safe, Mike
