You ever have unexplainable better-than-expected results with something and wonder why? No complaints of course, but curiosity has a tight hold on me this time.
Bought exhausts for the bikes recently. My girl wouldn't be back until late afternoon, so I decided to install her full set-up and if I had time, I wanted to just throw on my mufflers mainly just to see if I would like what I heard before I go replacing the headers and other items. Got hers done and all was as expected, runs way better, sounds way better, all is good. (she got a Zippers Max-Flow, set of Brouhards, and also a PC-V from Jamie <thanks Jamie!>) Needless to say she was pleasantly surprised!
All I did was throw on my Monster Ovals simply because I wanted to hear them from a riders perspective. We decide to go grab a bite and here's where MY surprise comes in. I did NOTHING else to my Roadie except throw on those MO's and the bike somehow pulls WAY harder than it did with the stock mufflers on it. Huh? Now, we all know they run lean to start with, so if anything I would have thought the bike would have run a pinch slower or at best the same. And, I'm damn sure I don't have some fluke-lucky extra-rich running bike from the factory. So, what gives? Yes, of course I plan on tearing into it to install the rest of my set-up I bought. But, how in hell could these MO's (or any muffler for that matter) without doing the air or EFI mod, wake up the bike in a manner in which they did? Don't get me wrong, it's a cool surprise, but I honestly don't understand how the difference could be that strong. Seriously, it was THAT noticeable. Very weird. Needless to say I can't wait until I get the headers a/c and tuner installed.
Reducing the back pressure always frees up a bit of power. The bike should be able to compensate for some changes, and obviously has. From what I understand, the EFI can make some adjustments, but anything more than muffler changes will require some reprogramming.
If you want another unexpected (good) surprise,,,,Put the A/C on and go for a ride Before you install the PC-V,,,Check your plugs they should be fine,,,
Wait a minute, back up. WTF??!! Muffler FELL off? Did I miss this in an earlier thread somewhere?
My bike is HDI and had the active exhaust system with the valve in it. the valve housing literally broke in half after 1800 miles. I was about 850 miles from home, so i rode the rest of the way with the muffler strapped on the passenger pad....
I hate it say this, but it is mind over matter. It is a bit a louder so it just feels stronger.
Nice thought, but you're way off on this one. Unless you're the type of rider that pays no real attention on how your bike behaves and are therefor unable to perceive minor changes should they occur. I'm one of those guys that is able to tell the mechanic what the bike does and under exactly what conditions. So, I'm used to picking up fine differences if and when they occur. As to the "louder" reference? You obviously haven't heard the MO's, they are FAR from loud. My first reaction after installing them was 'uh, that's it? where's the sound?". At cruise speeds (modest too) such as lowly 30-something MPH on up, I hear more wind and motor noise than I do exhaust. I can't hear them unless I romp on them, and even then they're tame. My references are from the same area roads I (sadly) travel all the time and some are so boring that I literally know how long I hold the throttle before I reach that second manhole cover. Yep, most roads here are so damn mind numbing that you'll find extra ways to entertain oneself!
I know what you mean though, seen it many time with dumb rich kids that used to pour money into noise and even after they were shown a dyno run on their car, they "knew" it was faster. Yeah, I getcha. But this my friend is oddly beyond any coincidence or any cute saying. Regardless, since my girl has her goodies on her bike, on my next day off it's MY turn for my bike and the full system goes on. I'll keep my expectations modest in hopes I'll have another surprise! Whatever it was or is, I'll take it!
Ok, here's what i think is going on, I've ''heard'' Harley had a ''extra special'' bike or 2 that they were experimenting with, well, they accidently were NOT pulled from the line, they made it though and were delivered to a couple of dealers accidently. Now, they are looking for them, because they are totally tricked out, hot bikes, so, if you see a black van all tinted out cruising around your area, hide the bike, they'll go to any means to recover them. Oh, they also have a funky type fuel system that will get a rumored 80 miles to the gallon.
