I recently moved to Columbia, SC from Jacksonville, FL and took my first ride in the mountains this weekend. One of my riding buddies road up on Friday and Saturday morning we headed out, destination was Waynesville, NC. We started out heading west on I-26 to Spartenburg, got side tracked, took a few side roads and ended up on Hwy 276 in Greenville. Took Greer Hwy through Ceasars Head State Park and continued on 276 through Pisgah National Forest to Waynesville, NC. Man, what a great ride! The Ultra Handled superbly through the twists and turns. I have to say, I thought that Florida had some of the best riding but I think I'm hooked on mountain riding now. We stopped and had a couple beers at a cool little bar called OMally's. If you're ever there, they have a great sheppards pie and beef stew. The weather was in the high sixties until the sun went down then the temp plummeted to the 30's. We headed back to Columbia on I-40 to I-26. We ended up putting 400 miles on yesterday and had a great time. 12 hours on the bike and I didn't feel fatigued at all.

Welcome to SC, sarge.
Glad you enjoyed our little slice of heaven here in Upstate SC.
I now live in Abbeville. Come 'round and have a cold one sometime.
Sounds like a great ride. I live in the Raleigh area and can say that the mountains are a great place to ride, though as you experienced it can get a bit nippy when the sun goes down. If you get more time travel the Blue Ridge Parkway, amazing ride.
Can any Carolinians around the Raleigh area share their favorite day rides. I have a couple around ****** lake but would like to get a few suggestions.
Welcome to the Carolinas. I moved to Asheville, NC in 1997 from Titusville, Fla. When you come this way again give us a shout I'll show you some great mountain roads.
It is said that the Blue Ridge/Smokey moutains are some of or The best riding in the USA? I for one believe it...Hwy 276 is an awesome piece off ***...phalt. Keep going up that way and turn on those little roads that you just ride by and say, i wonder what down that road...Welcome to the Carolinas.
I have lived here since 1987 and love it. You will really enjoy getting up on the Parkway and stopping at Freebournes and Station's Inn at the intersection of Hwy18. There is a life times of exploring ahead.
We love Jacksonville, FL also and have many friends there in the Orange Park area at the St. Johns River. I go boating there once or twice a year and always said if I moved to Florida it would be to Jacksonville. We really love the Outback Crab Shack and have boated down to Silver Glen which was beautiful.
If you like to eat here are a couple of suggestions.
1) The Galley - On Lake Hartwell at exit #14 off I-85 south of Greenville. A FANTASTIC Steak. Usually you need reversations on weekends.
2) Beacon Drive In - Spartanburg, SC "WOW" be hungry! The black guy that takes your order is a trip and you have to eat your way through the fries & onion rings to get to your burger. Remember to order "Ala Plenty".
Sarge, I gotta ask where else you've ridden if you thought Florida had some of the best riding. I did 3 tours in Jacksonville and the closest thing I found to a twisty in Florida was a cloverleaf intersection.
I also have to say, THANKS for your service. You have my respect!
Next time you go to Orange Park, you have to stop by Whitey's Fish Camp. Live music 6 days a week, biker and boater friendly. The Outback Crab Shak is nice too but since they were flooded out last year, it hasn't been the same. I look forward to exploring many more routes up here in the Carolina's.
276 through Pisgah National Forest to Waynesville, NC was a blast for us too. You will find many more roads like it once you return to the Smokys. From that area you can hit several great rides. We stayed in Maggie Valley (next to Waynesville) for a week and also ate at O'Malleys and found it pretty good. Between Waynesville and Maggie Valley there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.
