Default Not something I was expecting to see

Well the season is slowly coming to an end here in Germany and today happen to be a nice day, so why not give the bike a wash before my final ride on Veterans Day to St Avold France... To my surprise I found something very disturbing... a nice gouge on the front side of my tank... OBTW I have an 09 Ultra Classic.

I had my 1000 mile service back in Aug at the respectable HD dealer (of 4). My bike has never been anywhere near a tool that would cause this other than at the service dept... I store it in my garage and when at work it is right out front for many people to see if anyone messed with it. It definitely looks like a tool did this... something that has high speed spinning parts.

Your thoughts? A couple people already say it has to have been the service department during my 1k mile check up...

How have you missed seeing that since August? Looks like if it happened then you would have noticed before now.

Probably. Good luck trying to get them to accept responsibility now. If you cannot service your own bike always, always check it over with a fine tooth comb.

I do not know how you could of missed that in 2 months? Have you ridden your bike? Good luck getting the dealer to repair it for free. Like Dawg said I check my bike before I take it home.

Not saying the service department couldn't have done it but two months ago is a long time, first thing I do when I get my bike back from a service is a detail cleaning to check for marks. I would not expect that the dealer will say they did it two months ago, I'm not sure they did it either, two months ago.

That is suspect. I can't think of a tool that would do that in just a second [by accident]. Looks kinda like shaffing. Like something was hanging down over the tank and the wind/vibration took it and brushed it up against the tank for like a 1000 miles.

Did you have something pluged into to the lighter and put the bike on the jiffy stand ?
Because there is not much clearance between the tank and the lighter .

Well it's not an area that easily/obviously visible. I have been lax in cleaning my bike though simply cause life, job, and school have filled in a lot of my time gaps. Ya'll are right though, 2 months is a long time, but hidden behind the fairings it's not obviously/easily spotted/seen I found it when I was drying my bike... I thought I missed some bugs guts or something...

I ran through everything in my head that I could have hung off the handlebars. The only thing I have hanging would be a nylon bag that holds my iPod, but that doesn't even hang close to that. I plugged my iPod charger in once, but again plenty of clearance and that is platic, so it would've broken before it did that. I usually leave the wheel straight when I park it, unless I am in an unknown area then I turn/lock the bars...

I don't think the dealer will pay for it either... simply cause of the time passing, but that's even if they did it. It really is something that was not expected.

You can bet I will look this thing over with a fine tooth comb from now on anytime it's anywhere but in my garage. Ya live and learn I guess...

Hopefully they have some touch-up until I can get it fixed... no time the like the present for some ghost flames
