Leave the handlebars straight.
Turn the switch to the lock position.
Put the key in the lock.
With your finger depress the little button tab underneith the switch assembly - hold it.
Turn the key counter clockwise.
Pull up on the switch assembly - it comes out. Done.

Now remove your lower fairing to get access to the foward 2 allen screws
once removed re-install the switch assy into the assembly without the spring
This will keep everything aligned till you are finished
just in case you happen to turn the bars it won't matter at this point...

Now don't turn the handlebars all the way to the left or it will lock.
If you do and it does lock, Put the assembly back into place - switch facing locked position obviously.
Turn the key clockwise and remove.
Turn the switch to the Unlock position.
Straighten handlebars.
Do the removal again if need be...

Just some FYI. Most already know this, but under your favorites file, make a folder titled " Harley Tips or Harley How To's" and then same these kinds or threads. Great to go back to and refresh your memory or take the laptop to the garage for info while working on the bike.

I have saved this one for when I change my bars

So it is ok to move the bars with the switch assembly removed, and it will not get the switch out of alignment? Another post suggests that the bars cannot be moved without dropping the switch back in prior to moving bars. Just want to be sure before I screw something up.

You can move the bars without messing up the switch tumbler alignment. But turn too far left and the bar will lock. You know what to do if that happens...

TexasBowHunter had a good point though. Once you get the switch out, remove the lower panel (so you have access to the handlebar) and then reinstall the switch (without the panel of course).

Thanks for the help guys, made the adjustment today with no problems. Now I don't have any problem with bars or levers hitting the knees. One thing I would add would be to make sure you have a good quality 1/4" ball allen wrench about six inches long. Socket would work best so you can get leverage to loosen bolts and to re-torque them afterwards.

Ive done it with just a screw driver. BTW you realy dont have to remove that anyway. I just removed the radio and loosen the two front clamp screws....much easier!

Screwdriver works fine and I've got plenty of them. Keeping my $100. HD and Jims can keep their tools.
