Have an 05 FLHT, chrome pack on the engine, rocker box covers etc. Not too much, just all the brushed aluminum parts chromed. Looks good. Have a lot of chrome and Gloss Black powdercoat on the bike, bike's vivid black too. Just wondering if anyone has powdercoated their motor a gloss black, not black engine paint, I'll stay with the granite color over the dull paint. I'll leave the chrome parts chrome though, maybe diamond cut the heads? Might be too much though. Maybe not the diamond cut. Who knows. Can I do this?

My only thought on this topic is I've heard powdercoat in general doesn't give up heat too well - ie it's an insulator. Don't powder coat anything where heat dissipation is important.
powdercoat don't hold any more heat then chrome I went with gloss black on the covers, I seen cylinders coated and it looks nice, the factory motor and cylinders are powder coated from the factory so davesworks ya might want to strip yours

If that's what H-D does then it's good enough for me.
I don't really have an opinion (or care) about this. I recall asking about the stock cylinders and was specifically told they were not powder coated because of the reason I previously mentioned - but maybe I was misinformed. Or maybe it was so long ago that the MoCo wasn't using powder coating at the time and now they are. I don't know.
Powder coating is the application of plastic (a thermoset polymer) to a surface however and clearly not the equivalent of chroming which is the application of metal via electroplating. Plastic is an insulator whereas metals tend to be thermal conductors. As far as gloss is concerned I suspect that to achieve a gloss finish on the engine fins the end result would definitely be compromised cooling.

I know I've seen Gloss colors powder coated on engines in shows and advertisements. Wether these bikes are merely for show and not ridden I'm not sure. Most of them that I've seen have the diamond cut cylinders, which is shown to improve cooling, really it is. Maybe that's one more reason to do it. It makes sense to me that the powdercoating would increase engine temp though, especially a gloss, where more layers of powder are applied. Not sure.
Oh, Harley calls it a "krinkle coat" I was told, wether that's a fancy powder coat or a paint I don't know. I have seen the black come off of the older evos, a lot, and by now I bet the high mileage TCs are showing it too, which is why I would stay with the grey if gloss black is not an option.
Wood burning stoves and the like that are supposed to give off the maximum amount of heat and have been around a lot longer than any engine are what color and finish? Do you want your engine getting rid of the most heat or not. Your choice, style or substance.

this is wrong... your motor is coated from the factory. We have done tons of engine parts as well as complete engines. Powder will have no problem handling the heat.
I am a big beliver in 2 blacks... anything over that on the bike will look weird. if you have a wrinkle black motor and gloss black tins you are golden, it starts to look weird when you have wrinkle, gloss, satin, and diff shades of each. looks like it was all bought off ebay and put together.
I am building a bike right now for a customer and we are doing the entire motor in wrinkle then all the covers in wet black, the rocker boxes and push rods will be chrome... if you want to see any pics, pm me after the weekned and i can show you what it looks like.
if you have any questions please let me know

ok - well good to know. It's funny how you can end up getting the wrong idea from someone because you trust what they have to say about most everything else related to mechanics of the V-Twins. Thanks for the new info!
