Default Oil temp. gauge

Has anyone removed and replaced the worthless ambient air temp gauge with a oil temp gauge on the dash of a batwing fairing. Any parts needed besides the gauge and wiring harness and does the harness plug in or do you have to wire it. Thanks, *****

The kit has all you need, do a search and you will have more than enough feed back on it. It's a very good mod. Roger McEwen (spelling) has one also, I think the max temp on his gauge is a liitle lower than the HD one. Good luck.

Im going to do this also. I have had all the gauges out before when I painted my inner fairing so I have a question. I have since put on the chrome piece that goes around the radio, gear indicator, and the two gauges. Will the gauge pull out through the chrome piece or do I have to remove it?

I just had one put in at the dealer and had to re-do it.

I had an oil cooler put in at the same time. If you have the oil cooler the instructions have you put the sensor in the oil cooler lines with an adapter that fits in one of the hoses of the oil cooler. It does not work well at that location. It needs to go in the oil pan as it would without the oil cooler. Now it works nicely. It is not plug and play. You have to run a harness ffrom the pan along the frame into the faring. In the faring you use the light plug from the old guage to hook into the new harness. You have to cut the old plug off and solder the wires to the harness.

It's not that big a deal if you don't minf soldering and moving a bunch of wires out of the way to get to the old guage.

One suggestion is to remove the air temp, and move the volt meter gauge over to where the air temp gauge was. Then put the new oil temp gauge where the volt meter was, under the oil pressure gauge. That way your two oil gauges are together. I saw someone suggest that when I installed my oil temp gauge.

Here's (below) a thread I started.

Everything that is required is in the kit except the ptfe (teflon) thread sealant Harley recommends. I invested in additional 18 gauge wire so I could run the wires from the sending unit in the oil pan back towards the rear of the bike up behind the seat under the fuel tank into the fairing. Running wire up the down tube just doesn't cut it for me. You'll have to extend the power wires for the gauge if you want to move it to the right side of the fairing. None of this is very difficult.

It's actually pretty simple - just a little time consuming if you want to hide everything.
I went with the oil pan option, and ran the wire rearward along the frame (through the stock tie straps), then up under the tank and forward.
I also managed to put the sensor in without loosing more then a couple drops of trans fluid. Just make sure you have the teflon tape on the sensor and everything is handy when you pull the plug.
Other then that - wire the guage first - then install it. Not much room after it's installed in the fairing.
