Default What GPS unit

Thinking about mounting a GPS unit on the Road King. What make and model do you guys use and how do you mount it on the bike. I thought it might be a good mod to the bike while it's sitting over the winter.

Any pro's or con's about different units out there would be good too.

one of the things I like the best about these units..

when the wife says "Iam hungry" I stop and she can search what places are close to eat, when she finds the one SHE wants... click on go and we are off..

Then when its time to find a motel... same thing.... click on motels and all in the area come up with address and phone number... I start calling and away we go...

and it help when you get lost...

Right now I am useing Garmin on my PDA, I have never had a problem with it, but now the maps are gettring outdated, so for Christmas I am getting a Magellin, it has a bigger screen, I made the mount for my PDA out of a bycicle refector mount, pop riveted a holster to it.
Don't know if this is what you wanted to know but I hope it helps.

I have the Zumo 550 with a chrome Ram mount. I have the mount on both my bikes so I can move the GPS to the bike I am riding. The new Zumo 660 has a wider screen, newer bluetooth for stereo music, and an internal speaker. But does not have the capability for XM Radio/Traffic/Weather like the Zumo 550 does. I also wired mine directly to the battery. This way I do not have to push a button for the GPS to remain powered on when I stop for gas. You will love the GPS once you get it. I just ride where I like and then when I need gas or need to head home I just push a button and it takes me there.

I have had several GPS units, all Garmins. I will have nothing but Garmin because of their customer service, the best around.

I started out with a 2610, then to a 2720, Quest II and a few in between.

Now with a Zumo 550 and it has been the best for a motorcycle...go to Garmin's web site and you can compare side by side several units.

Can't go wrong with 550 or 660....built for motorcycles..waterproof, buttons large for gloved hand, buttons on left side, just a great all around unit....

If money was an object I would check ebay for a good used 2720...

I have used Garmins for 5 years. Started with the Nuvi 350 and now have the 265wt. Larger screen. They are not waterproof but do not care. In light rain I put a baggiei over it. In heavy rain I put my phone and gps in my tourpak. Zumo listed above is a great unit but to pricey for me. I paid $200 and use it in my truck also. Any gps you buy you can get a mount from RAM.com or make something yourself.
I gives you the confidence to explore and like stated above you can find hotels and places to eat in a second.

I have the HD version, which is the zumo 660, mounted it with a ram mount, nice thing is it comes with all the HD dealers installed into it, I've been on several long trips and needed to stop in at a dealer to have my bike looked at and all I have to do is hit the button and it finds dealers that are close by. picked it up for $550 at my local dealer, husband wired it all in and I love it, used to use a TomTom but always had to take it off if it started to rain, and you couldn't sit at the computer and plan a trip and down load it with the tomtom that I had. Oh yea, it does have bluetooth, and the wiring harness has a plug for headphones that can come out next to your seat so you can use earphones if you want for mp3 music or optional xm radio. lots of nice features.

I went a different route a few years ago. I use a Garmin 478 which is actually a Marine Chartplotter unit. It has auto-routing, maps pre-loaded, XM Radio, and NEXRAD moving radar. Has internal batteries or can run off the cig lighter. It will accept PC generated routes too.

I mount it to the handle bar via a RAM ball mount.

Handles the elements very well (it was built to by used on water) but is not low in price.

Hope that helps.
