The "K" stands for "kilo", which stand for "1,000", which stands for the extra grand the dealer makes on this model.

Hey somebody had to say it !!!

Here's a good link: http://www.dlhill.com/hdalphabet.html

According to the author K has been used to designate: K: More powerful K model (ex. 1955 K11K)

Building one likely combination from this,

F would stand for Overhead Valve (pretty sure this is right)
L would stand for higher compression engine - although I've always thought this was 16" front wheel with Hydraglide front end
H would stand for larger engine
T would stand for touring
(or HT for Highway Touring)
K would stand for more powerful engine

went to those alpha site...not what I understand about Harley's codes....

As I understand, FL was designated for some unknown reason, don't think it means anything ( Fat Tire etc.) we had UL, EL, FL
UL was the side valve motor, EL was the small displacement twin and FL was the 74" Big Twin.
FLH came along - designated handlebar mounted fairing, large forks
FLT = FL touring with fixed fairing
FLHT=FL, Handlebar fairing, touring ( tourbox)
then XL came along....sportster
XLH= sprotster HOT
XLCH= compition Hot
then Harley mounted a XL front end on a FL frame===FX models ( superglides)
FXR= ruber mounted
then softails = FL frame, softail suspension = FLST
add springer = FLSTS...FXSTS and so on....
so basicaly, any Harley with large forks and tires, FL series
Harley with small forks and large motor FX
Sporsters XL
FLTR=road glide ( fixed fairing)
FLTRX=custom RG
Ultra=FLH(handlebar)T(touring)C(classic)U(Ultra)I( injection)K(custom) etc...etc...FLHTK my guess is they dropped the extra letters and K is a Ultra (FLHTCUI) Custom...FLHTK

SO
FL=Big motor, big forks
FX=big motor, small forks
XL=sporster
the rest denotes frame, fairing, custon(?)

where it will end???? who knows.

my .02 worth
