I'm running 10.5:1 and ping if it's over 90 two up IF I get on it too much without downshifting. Heat was looking like it "might" be a problem so I installed HD's super premium oil cooler. I should have done that a year ago. I love the thing and highly recommend it. As for the pinging... I just take it a little easier under those conditions. The bike is a 05 FLHTCi 95 cu in with forged pistons, SE heads and SE 211 cams.
I'm running 10.5:1 with no pinging. I installed HD's super premium oil cooler with motor build. Motor has nearly 10,000 miles on the build with no problems, no pinging, no over heating but it does spit a little oil. Just enough to be annoying.
Properly tuned, there are plenty of cams that will allow a build to run 10+:1 w/o pinging.
THat said, there are more cams that will not run @ that CR w/o pinging NO MATTER what you do. It's all about "matching" the components of your build and getting it properly tuned.
BLK ~ do you have a 10+:1 build and it is pinging (if so, what cams) or just inquiring?
Heat can be managed with good oil and a good oil cooler. TC engines are designed to withstand a lot of heat as it is.
Had 10:1-1 on my 03 Fatboy with SE Head ,Flat Tops and Woods gear drive cams. As long as I was using 91 and better gas no pinging. In fact I only remember it pinging once when it was 107 and I didn't gear down properly. A proper tune, and good matching components and you shouldn't have to worry. I will add though, that my reason for staying below 10:5-1 was for that reason.
