Default Wiring for RoadKing fairing

Can any members with an aftermarket fairing on their RoadKing explain where they obtained their 12v hook-up? Did you run a fused wire directly from the battery terminals? Is there a 12v connector or hook-up unused in the original HD wire harness perhaps? How about your qwik connect, where did you hide it? Any pictures would be of great help..........thanks guys & girls!

Hi,
When I put my memphis shades fairing on (added MP3 at same time), I used the underseat 12 Aux socket.
I bought the 1 into 2 extension lead so still have one spare to use for something else if needed.
The lead was about $20 and you should find the plugs just in front of your battery (orange square plug with 4 pins).

Sorry , got no photo's)
Rowle.

Thanks Rowle
Where can you get a matching connector to mate up with this orange plug rather than cutting and splicing? I assume this connection point is fused then?
Any idea as to why 4 pins? Are some wires hot all the time and others controlled by ignition/acc switch? How about the extra toggle switch on the handlebar cover, one is for the passing lamps, the other???? And what year is your bike model? Thx again......

My Aux socket under the seat is also a 4 pin. One side is hot all the time, the other side is controlled by the Acc switch on the front end. The accesory harness rowle is referring to, is part # 70264-94a. It lists for $17.95. My woody's fairing has a great quick disconnect mounted on the underside of the fairing, and I have the wiring run under the tank with the main harness. My stuff is at the painter right now, so I can't get you a pic right now. Contact Glenn with Woody's, and he can hook you up with the disconnect. He's also a member here.

Default I have Two

Before I bought the fairing I added the HD 12v adapter to the right side cover and used the switched connection under the seat. The fairing came prewired with it's own 12v adapter.

I took out the unused toggle switch in the nacelle and made the hole a little larger and put in a marine grade quick disconnect. You could also use a Powerlet socket. I took power off the light for the fender (which I didn't use anyway).

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm thinking my best bet would be to purchase that adapter and splice the male connector onto the fairing power cord and plug into that orange connector. That way I don't have to cut the OEM harness up. I would like some sort of qwik connect on the left side by the frame neck, so it is hidden when the bike is on the side stand and the bars fall to the left. Is that a 12v power port on your side cover then Blue Duck? Never seen that before, but very useful for someone without a fairing with power port. I always carry a mini 12v compressor for roadside emergencies, tires, shocks etc. Thanks guys.....

I also used the connector under the seat, the SECOND time. The first time I ran a wire straight to the battery and didn't bother to fuse it. I have a quick disconnect under the handle bars so I can take the fairing off quickly. Unfortunatly the original plug that came with the fairing had the exposed male pins on the bike side. About a week after I installed all this I had the bike at the dealers for some work and they of course washed it when they were done. Shorted the plug which melted the wire under the dash. Damn near set the bike on fire. Entirely my fault so I did it right the next time, live and learn.

If you want pictures let me know and I'll shoot some tomorrow, though I'm not that proud of the wiring right now. One of my projects this winter is to clean this up a bit to make it look better. In addition to the power I also have wiring to bring sound to the rear speakers I added on the tour pak, also removable and on plugs. And wires to bring sound to the intercom system for when the wife is on and we are wearing helmets.

George.

Positive to + battery with fuse. Ground terminal to -battery. Acc wire Ignition switch under tank console (Red w/Silver Stripe). You can make your own harness but if you don't want to Dead Center Cycles makes a nice detachable(mounts on neck) one fused using Deutsch(waterproof) connectors for around $20.
