I have a new 09 FLHX yet to be put on the road (due to cold / snow) I'm going to go with a Stage One but don't really know anything about the "race tuner" aspect of things. Should I go with a race tuner to stilck with the basic Stage One ?
A "textbook" Stage 1 is exhausts, hi-flow air cleaner, SERT, and dyno.
There are several different models other than the HD SERT (Screaming Eagle Race Tuner) that you could choose, and many, such as the Power Commander, have lots of maps you can choose from. And there are various maps for the SERT out there as well.
While I don't mind turning wrenches, I have decided that I am leaving ECM mapping and tuning to someone who knows a hell of a lot more about it than I do...so I went with the SERT, and the dealer dyno'ed the bike as a part of that. Note that with the HD SERT, it 'marrys" itself to your bike...so it can't be used on another bike, where as some of the other models can.
Thanks for the info. I was just not sure about the race tuner thing - have heard plenty but thought I would check here as well. I will be in touch with the dealership in Windsor shortly and have it looked after....Pipes, breather, tuner & dyno of course.
HD can download and install a "generic" map update...but as in all things generic, it really is just reducing how lean the fuel mixture is. The SERT along with a dyno is in essence a method to custom tune whatever exhausts you put on with whatever hi-flow air cleaner you put on. There are "canned" maps out there for the most common components, such as Rinehart pipes, etc., but the SERT and a dyno allows "tweeking" specific to your bike.
FYI on a Stage 1, don't look for "it threw me back in the seat" performance differences...you aren't going to see that. While you will get a bit of a bump in horsepower, you will notice the bike runs cooler, smoother, and your gas mileage will actually be a bit better.
Just did the stage 1 from fuel moto on my 2009 road glide last friday. The racing tuner, air cleaner and jackpot mufflers. Took me about 2 hours ( should have taken an hour, but I'm **** ). It cost me $685.00 and I got the parts in 4 days ( Southern California ) It was pretty easy to do, and the mapping was already set up on the Power commander V. Just call Jamie at Fuel Moto...he'll hook you up. The best money I've spent on my ride. Have had many positive comment on the slip on mufflers.
+1 on the bike running cooler, smoother, and better gas mileage. The PCV also comes with a CD for future mods to the engine. Plus, Fuel moto will support any special mapping you need.
