You sound like me. I have friends that say they hear their stock radio just fine at 70 mph.
I couldn't, so here is the write up I did. I went with the Biketronic's 360 watt system.
I don't know who or what is the best system, but I can now here my radio at any speed.

Hogtunes amp, speakers and hog-pod.
Probably could have spent more for better, but figured $425 was enough.

Two complaints though..one is the buffeting and the sound level/quality of the stereo. The buffeting I am going to work on by getting a triple tree baffle and deciding on a new windshield.

I have Rinehart slip ons on it and at speeds of 50-60 with a full face helmet (visor open) and a 10" windshield (dont like the looks of it) I still cannot hear the stereo very well. Some of it is buffeting and what I do hear does not sound very clear. Im not an audiophile, but I do like to listen to the radio when I am riding. I have looked at the threads on the different speaker upgrades and then the package deals with amp/speak ie Hogtunes. I dont feel like I need to spend a ton of money since I really only want to hear things at a decent quality. The speaker only upgrades talk about 20-25% more volume and then the least expensive amp/speaker combo boosts the amps from 20 to 32 but at quite a bit more money.

So, I am asking if I need an amp or would speakers like Hogtunes 902.2's work well enough?

Thanks!
Dave
Arc miniamp here.As far as the wind buffeting I run a Clark Custom 11'' flattop windshield. So much quieter behind this shield for me.My cousin over in Tigard bought the Clark half moon shield and loves it.

Contact AaronOregon who's a sponsor here and he can hook you up with a marine amp (water resistent) that kicks A$$ and some 6.5" speakers and adapter rings for about $450. I have to be careful not to have it turned up more than 1/2 way or it's too loud.

I did the Arc Audio Mini Amp and the upgraded speakers....it rocks! Clear and crisp and the stereo will jam at any speed.

Here's the writeup.

All the previous suggestions are valid, I'll just add this in the meantime; Have you tried turning the treble up and bass down at the higher volumes? That will make a huge difference in increasing the volume and reducing distortion-both from the speakers and the radio itself. Also depending on your height and the windshield you're running, try some cheap foam earplugs worn loosly. You'll be surprised how much you'll hear without the air rushing past your ears like blowing across a beer bottle.

I am running a clearview 8" windshield, and a fork baffle. No buffeting issues. Sometimes I wear my fullface, somtimes my half helmet, and sometimes no helmet. I got the arcmini amp, 6.5" speakers and rings from Firecap101 for about $450. I was cruising at 90 today in a heavy winds and could hear my stereo clearly and it sounded great. I usually listen to my mp3 player or a CD rather than the radio.

I went through the same thing. Went with Hogtunes which is a great company with the same support. However, I found that I was still just not getting what I wanted and the increase in volume level was minimal. Decided that enough was enough and bought Hawg Wired's 150 watt amp and 75 watt speakers. Holy **** Batman... there's a reason they are not cheap and now I can hear the tunes lol. OUTSTANDING product and like Hogtunes, supported to the max. I've since sold that bike, bought another and yes again went with a new Hawg Wired system. They flat out kick ***.

I am sure I will get some counter responses but here is my opinion...

I love good sound and have a pretty good ear for quality. I too wanted more sound from my system and chose to go with a high end 180 watt per channel amp and 6.5" speakers. Doesn't really matter what brand as there are plenty of good ones. My system is loud and really rocks. The windshield I run is not the best for providing a GOOD POCKET for the sound without wind interferance at the higher speeds. (65 to 80 mph) I can hear the system with a full face on and all that good stuff.

But... Listening to high end sound with a back pack blower blowing straight in your face, will greatly reduce what you actually hear. (wind in your face which also blows right past your ears) So if you really want to hear the best sound possible on a motorcycle, get a windshield that puts you in a pocket, not one that looks good. And then if you want to hear good music at high speeds, invest in a good set of earphones that will plug into your stereo head unit.

Bottom line is this... You could go with a good windshield, upgraded speakers and a set of earphones and be very happy. You could also spend big money on a high end amp and be very pleased with the right wind shield. Just don't expect it to sound like you are sitting in your living room in a contolled enviroment listening to some high end home theater.

By the way, I do like my set up but if I had to do it over, I would only upgrade my speakers and get a good set of earphones. But that is just my opinion.

Good luck...

And if it is loud enough to hear over 80mph highway speeds, expect some hearing issues as the system I have will produce enough volume to cause ear ringing. That is where the earphones come in for a more controlled envirement.
