I always check the Ol before riding; ol man taught me that.

Monitor the oil pressure (pump o/p) gauge on flashup (don't rev cold engine).

Make sure the bike is on the level (back/front) and ..................... supported by the jiffy stand.

Buy a manual - know the location of the (3) drains. USE A TORQUE WRENCH/ IMPACT SCREWDRIVER.

If it was at the full line cold, it was too full. I usually set mine so it is at the bottom line cold or a little above. That almost always brings the level to right below the top full line when at operating temp.

Here's what I do when checking for consumption, I always check it cold, in the same spot in garage (any variation in bike angle can throw check way off). The reason being, for checking when cold is the temperture is always pretty close, where as checking it hot, it can be off over a hundred degrees, depending on the outside temps, riding conditions etc. For some reason, with Harley oil pans, and the expansion of oil when it gets hot, the reading can be all over the dip stick range. But when checking for having the correct amount in it, I check it hot. Like some have said : you should run it between add and full on the dipstick when cold, that way it will be pretty close to full when hot.

I check it hot after every ride, leave it a little below the top hash mark.
