Default Open Air Cleaner

Like a lot of you on this forum, I like to have my Arlen Ness Big Sucker air cleaner out in the open (see attachement). Two questions:

1. When I clean and re-oil the filter, it looks great. After a week or two of riding, the nice red oil coating seems to disappear and it turns to a grey/white color. Is everyone re-oiling their A/C every couple of weeks?

2. When washing the bike, I normally place an elastic cover over the air cleaner, however, even though I do not spray directly at the air clear, some water still collects inside the plastic cover and saturates the bottom of the filter. What are you doing to prevent the air cleaner from getting wet when you wash you bike?

I re-oil mine probably once every other month. I should probably more often, but I asked the mech at the shop last week about it while it was in for the 5k service, and he said every 6-8 weeks, so I'm not doing too bad (but then, I don't ride a whole lot during the summer, 110 degree weather just sucks to ride in!)

As far as washing, I have never covered the air cleaner with anything, and haven't had any problems. I don't spray it directly with the hose, but the filter should be able to handle it. I've ridden through thunderstorms with both my Lowrider and Glide, no problems (yes it does storm here in Phoenix, just not that often!)

I cover mine with a plastic bag or tin foil when I wash the bike.

Mine turn gray too after a while, so every once in a while I spray a little oil on it just to be safe.

I'm going with the open look also. Another question, what oil are you using to oil the filter and do you take it off, etc? Sounds kinda dumb, but this is all new to me.
