I have a SG and I love it, but whichever one you choose...

...make sure you change the front rotors to the floating rotors of your choice before you take delivery.

Well, I don't usually get involved in these type discussions because it mostly involves opinions. Everyone has one and you have to get what YOU want. However, I owned an 03' RG and now have a 06' SG and can offer some unbiased comparisions:

As far as handling, I would say that my 03' RG handled a bit better than the SG. You do tend to have a bit more stable ride with the frame-mounted fairing. Now, the difference is not huge by any means, but at times I notice it when pushing the bike towards it's limits. Also, the SG has 12" shocks compared to the RG's 13" shocks. This will make a difference also as the lower you go, the more ride you tend to give up. However, shocks can be changed out very easily. The RG can offer you more in handlebar options where the SG's batwing fairing limits you to only a few bars that are wide enough to clear the fairing opening on either side. I have Chubby bagger bars on mine and they are very nice but you are limited. To me, I cannot tell any significant difference as far as wind/coverage protection behind the fairing. Both bikes offer many different windshield options depending on your height and personnal preference. Without running a larger/taller windshield, you will get some buffeting on both bikes. As far as the fairing on the RG not turning with the handlebars thus feeling "weird", this is a non-issue. It may take about 5-10 minutes of adjustment if that.

Because I ride on the Southern California freeways everyday, (trucks, wind, high traffic, 75-80 mph, etc.), sometimes I consider changing out the SG fairing to a RG sharknose fairing. I do my own work, so for me this would only be a weekend project plus cost of parts. However, sometimes I feel the change would not offer any dramatic difference. So, in the end, both bikes are great, look awesome and handle quite well. It really does come down to what YOU like better. Hope this helps...........

The striping on the RG has never been attractive to my eye. Saw the pics of the RG 07 models and the striping looks much better to my eye.

Buy the RG in a SG color, then buy the special effects rear fender trim, LED light, etc. and have a rear fender on your RG that is identical to a SG; I think that is the best of both worlds. You can get this done for under $200 in parts and you wouldn't need any painting done. I am waiting for the painter to finish my FLHX fender, special effects trim etc. before I put it on my 04 EG. You would have one really unique RG with that rear fender.
