A lot of good info! I just turned 10k on my 06 RKC and have been kicking around the idea of putting an auto chain tensioner on my bike. I was looking at the MOCO model and the Hayden model but after watching the SOHO vid, looks like a no brainer! Thanks Dawg!

Man, I love this bike, but these parts are really seeming sucky. My jap bike sure was built with good parts. I have a 2010 Ultra and I am in shock reading this.

Thanks for the clear and concise write up. I'll be saving this one thank you very much! Even the pics alone were damn good. Good enough for my blind a$$ to see the details! Very nice, thank you.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm considering getting the SOHB wedge for my 07 Softail. It still has the original HD auto tensioner. I can't figure out if I would be better off with the HD updated tensioner (39929-06A) or the Wedge from SOHB. There are many conflicting stories on various sites about this issue, but I can't really make up my mind. Since the summer riding season is now over, maybe there is more feedback to be had from those of you running the hydraulic wedge...Good or bad, I need to come to a conclusion. I hope you all are not tired of talking about this. The more I read, the more confused I get!
Summary of what I think I read:

The original HD auto adjuster on 06 Dynas and 07-? all other models had some issues with either going to tight or not tightening enough. The revised model 39929-06A is better.

The first production units of the SOHB wedge were made poorly. It has been updated, and is now better?

Does that about cover it?

Clayvis,

From what I have heard, the only change with the updated SOHB is that they put the oil hole on the side of the wedge, instead of the front. I have not heard from anyone who has run the new version. However, I was able to "fix" my older version and have had a successful season with it.

The problem with it was that it would close too far (loose chain position), and it would bind in that position. It would actually get stuck there. I added a small spring from Ace hardware behind the wedge to keep it from reaching that position.
It works perfectly now.

The length of the spring is short enough, to put zero tension on the wedge when it's in it's "home" position. It is not adding to the primary chain tension.
But it is preventing the wedge from going backward too far. I am very pleased with the results.

If I were to buy the improved version, I would still toss a spring in there (can't hurt).
Also, it will never "ratchet up" into a too tight position, like the stock tensioner.

I wish I had known about this a couple of months ago. I replaced my clutch hub bearing and my primary chain. The rollers on the original chain (at 30K) were visibly dented where they roll over the sprocket because the tensioner was keeping the chain so ridiculously tight.

Oh...I switched to the SE clutch spring at the same time. LOVE IT!! Tougher pull but you get used to it quickly.

Thanks for the input Ed. You have given me the incentive I needed to go ahead and order the SOHB Wedge. I might hit you up again if I have trouble locating the spring you used. There is an Ace close to my house, so I hope they have a good spring selection...
