I was thinking of getting a detachable luggage rack for my 09 streetglide. Then I thought , why not just get the detachable tour pack mount and use it as a luggage rack? Then, down the road, I could pick up a tour pack, and I'd have the mount for it. Good idea? anyone thought of or done it?

Why not jump in and get a tour pak with a luggage rack? Once you have the combo you'll never go back!
You didn't say if you had the 4 point docking system of not. You could get the quick detach mount and the docking system if you don't have it and then pick up on of the cheap 100.00 tour packs of e-bay and see if you like having a tour pack on your bike.
I have one on my bike (See Signature Pick) I'm saving up for my Harley tour pack and watching for deals. Currently a member of O'bama's 10 % so I have to watch my pennies right now.
Sure...why not.
I have both and like being able to switch but hey, if I was trying to save some dough I think it sounds reasonable. It will work as both and you can always trade or add whatever.
But like Tex R asked....do you have the 4 point?
Thanks for the replies. I will have to get the 4 point mount as I haven't got that yet either. I want to take advantage of some of the good holiday discounts out there. Lighthouse H-D in N.Y. is offering 25% off through tomorrow.
That's the reason I asked. The four point mount is $149.95 and the pre-09 are cheaper. Then you and the removable tour pack rack it's a $179.95 for either. Add to that a base model king tour pack your talking $750.00 before tax and any discounts you may find your at $1,100.00.
I have the 4 point and the sissy bar which I made the dealer throw in when I purchased the bike. I told them the wife wouldn't ok the deal with out. And purchased te tour pack mount and the $100.00 aftermarket tour pack of e-bay.
So, I'm into mine for $279.00.
Now I am looking for a oem tour pack and it doesn't have to be a great one, I can do fiberglass and paint work (Not a Professional) But I do have a close freind in the fiberglass business, that could get me out of trouble if I needed.
None of use know what your finacial state is and maybe dropping 1.3 to 1.5k on what you want isn't a problem and if I could do it I would in a drop of a hat.
However, I am a member of O'Bama's 10% (Un-employed) and money is tight.
I noted you said your dealer os offering 25% Off, that usually dosn't apply on special orders.
