Have a 2003 FLHTCi. Put in big bore (88 to 95 ins3) and as part of that had system re-mapped. Average highway mileage went from 45 mpg (can) to 50 mpg (can). I figure improved torque meant I did not change to a loer gear as much. Who knows? Who cares?
My 124 is running low 12 sec passes on the 1/4, I belt it daily and get 38 avg. 34 worst, 42 when riding with HOGgies.
It could get 20 for all I cared, I would just pay it. The cost of fuel is such a tiny proportion of the total cost of ownership of a Harley that it just aint worth even thinking about.
Your fuel consumption will not be much different, which I think most replies tell you. With a stock bike, or one with only mild mods, to get the thing to go requires plenty of throttle. After fitting a big-bore kit and assuming it is set up properly on a dyno it will give the same performance with lower throttle opening. I have an S&S 107 in my bike and the fuel consumption is only slightly lower than the stock engine.
Or in other words, go do it! Let us see the smile on your face when it is done....
