Default Cam Labor ?

I'll be contacting my local dealer tomorrow re: labor to install a cam. What is a reasonable amount of time to expect for the job ($70/hr local rate)? I'd be using adjustable pushrods to make things easier, along with bearing upgrades. Thanks for any input... Troop

3-3.5 hours, not including any dyno tuning or SEST hookup.

We charge 3.5 for the cams with the adjustable push rods, .5 for the inner bearings and 1 for a custom built (not just a canned map) base map.

Winter rate here is $56. Had my cams, lifters and dyno tune. 5 hours labor (including the tune). I kept my stock push rods. I got used SE 255's for $155, so my total was $800. I thought this was a really good price investment for not doing it myself. Several on this forum have done their own cam change. At $79/hour and parts, you may be looking closer to $1100.

Why does everyone seem to like adjustable push rods? I know many who used them but none seem to read the info on them about adjusting them. I used the push rods that came in the bike from the factory, less to go wrong. I doubt the dealer is going to give you a break on the price for the push rods,so they rack up and you have more maintenance.

I was quoted six hours at $62 per hour. This is with adjustable pushrods and no dyno. The labor rate seemed right but the hours were high.

Maybe because it's much easier and faster to cut the stock ones out and replace with adjustables than to dick with the rocker boxes when just doing a cam swap.

If you are pulling the heads anyway for porting and/or big bore it really wouldn't matter much time wise if you used adjustables or the perfect fit variety.
