Nice write up.

Just one word of caution to people who may be using this on their own project. The 2.5 turns on the pushrods is only for the SE adjustables (other brands may be the same as well). You have to know how many threads per inch of your pushrods. Take that number and divide it by 10 to get the proper number of turns for adjustment. My Head Quarters adjustables were 32 threads per inch (iirc) so they require 3.2 turns on the adjustment. You want the lifter plunger compressed .100".

Hope this helps
Zach

Yeah, the first crank is nerve-wracking. I was fairly confident with mine since there were no parts left over after re-assembly! I cranked mine and it began firing on one cylinder! Oops, I immediately knew the problem: Forgot to attach the front spark-plug wire. Reattached it and noticed no weird noises or leaks. It was a great relief, and after 9k miles there still have been no parts fall off or weird noises surface. Voila!

This was a great experience and I am glad that I did this project. I hope these posts were insightful to everyone. A final write-up will follow.
Me too. It was my first cam job, and it not only gave me confidence to do it again (not anytime soon), but gave me a better understanding of how it all worked. And I love saving money! Mine cost $285 including the Beatty tool and cam-install kit, but could cut it to about $200 if I were to do it again.

Your tutorial was great, and should encourage others to do their own cam jobs. I'll expect a "Day 5" to give us a report on your observations on the performance improvement. Ditto on the exhaust-noise increase, which I fully expected but didn't like. Yesterday I installed Fuel Moto's "quiet baffle" for the Jackpot muffler (right side), along with the black tips, and will be doing a write-up later today after I take a test ride, which I'm going to do right now.

BTW, I agree with you on the exhaust part of the job--definitely the biggest PITA of the project. By that time I wasn't in the mood for replacing the exhaust gaskets so I left the old ones in, so far with no problems. A tech and the HD shop said they can be reused if not too old or broken.

Great writeup again. I've been cutting/pasting into a Word document, along with others notes through your writeups. Thanks for taking the time to document the entire procedure!

One question. Did you re-use the original push rod covers? Or did you buy new ones?

The tapered adjustable pushrods come with new chrome covers, clips and orings. The spring loaded portion of the pushrod cover is reused.

Thanks for the quick response. Ordered the tapered and the stage 1 a/c from Zanotti's. Monday I'll call Jamie and order the PC, now I only have to decide between the Fuel Moto PCIII or the PC-V.

You've made a great contribution for all of us to enjoy! Many folks will be referring to your experience for many years.

I'll be doing this myself this summer - or sooner. Thanks so much for taking the time to do such a great write-up.

How do we get this put into the knowledge base area?
