Default Trip planning advice needed

We're going on a ride this summer from Toronto to Virginia Beach and back. We'll be on a 2007 Ultra with true duals and Rineharts, and a Zumo 550. I need to find out if there's a problem with loud pipes (louder than stock) in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia. I'll be putting the Harley dealer list, and possible hotel stops in the Zumo. Packing half helmets for the heat and 3/4 helmets w/sheilds for rain, rainsuits, cable lock, tools that came with the bike. Any suggestions for routes, points of interest, tools, spare parts or anything to make the trip better, safer, more interesting or whatever would be appreciated. I know this trip probably isn't a big deal to some of you, but it will be our biggest one so far and the first ride in the U.S.

Thanks in advance

Kevin and Marian

I can only tell you about Virginia, They will not hastle you about loud pipes. I lived there almost 30 years until I retired two years ago. My question would be, why do you want to go to Virginia Bch? You must have family there? Most people in Virginia (bikers anyway) go a little farther south to Nags Head NC or farther down the coast.

Good guess, yes it's a family visit. They just finished visiting up here and we're going there in July, I know, it's real hot then, but that's when I get two weeks off work.

The only extra things that I ALWAYS keep with me are a bunch of zip ties "just in case", and a very small 1/4" drive socket set that's come in quite handy a few times. I've also got Rinehart true duals and don't think you'll get hassled anywhere unless you're getting on it just for the sake of getting on it. If you're just driving normal they're not obnoxiously loud and you shouldn't have any problems. (But I do shift up a gear whenever I happen to see a cop just to be safe)

I have traveled all the States you are going through many times and you should have no issues with the pipes, just be easy on the throttle in towns to be safe. If you can do the shore route through Maryland and get off the interstate. The bridge tunnel takes you from Maryland into Va. right at Va. beach.
The bridge dives into the water twice into tunnels so boats can get through and has a rest stop halfway across, very cool.

Ear Plugs. I know it sounds silly, but you will not believe how much better a long road trip is when you wear ear protection. You will not be as tired when you arrive at your destination. You will be able to carry on a conversation off the bike without yelling. Full-face helmets tend to be noisier than 3/4 helmets, but even with earplugs you can easily use the intercom or listen to the stereo. They don't have to be expensive, custom-fitted ear plugs. Even just using cotton ***** in your ears will make a huge difference.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip!

I would not rely on the zumo only. I suggest picking up the HD road atlas as a back up. You will probably not need it, but it would be good back-up. Electronics go bad at the worst time from my experience.

I personally don't relpy on a GPS. I buy a map everytime I cross into a new state, and use my HOG Atlas. Usually get lost along the way, but for us that is the fun of it. We have a standing joke, if we are heading east, if we see the Statue of Liberty we'll stop and get a picture, and if we are heading south/west, the same thing goes with the Alamo!!

Good advice here. If you can get over to the coast, theres good scenery all the way to Va. Bch. If you like seafood, Theres a good place to eat at Rudy Inlet. Get a seat near the inlet side, you can watch the boats come in and out. Have a safe trip!
