If you ever bought saddlebags had to relocate your rear turn signals on a softtail or sportster,
you know there is not much room for your fingers between the rear tire and the inner fender.
I'm amazed there is not more problems there.

Had the same thing happen on my old Road King. Ended up re-wiring the *** end and using on of the newer adhesive conduits. Never had any problems after that.

Yep, Been there too

My tail light/brake light stopped working. So I checked the fuse. It was blown. Changed the fuse tried it again. POOF, blew a fuse. Ohm checked and I was shorted to ground. Following the harness back I found that the tire wore threw the harness. Lots of bare wires. I patched it up rewrapped it and relocated the harness. All is fine now. Just thought I would share since this sounds like it might not be an isolated case.

Happend shortly after my Dealer replaced my tires. The Mechanic might have bumped the harness in the fender. Just guessing. I didn't take it back to them because it was easy enough for me to fix and just get back to riding.

Just a "heads up" on your "heads up" :-) You've got to be careful about using lowering blocks and/or shocks or you'll be hitting the wiring and the fender if you're not careful...replacing the wiring harness and fender ain't cheap. Here's some good info w/ a formula on how to check the correct distance between the tire and fully compressed shocks in this thread:

Funny you say that, I was doing some paint work for a friend the night he brought the parts to my place he said the same thing "glad I pulled the thing a part, found all the wiring around the rear fender had worn thru to bare wire"...might not be a bad thing to check over the non-riding months..
