Of all the cams threads I've read, never seen anyone talk about the S&S. I'm sure there's somebody that has them, just saying I've never seen anyone chime in about them on any thread I've read. That should tell you something.
With that said, it seems that the 'best' cams are the ones that that person has in their bike. In other words, if I had the SE255's and liked them, then those would be the cams I'd recommend. Same holds true for Woods, HQ's, etc. I DO think there's a difference between the various cams, but it's based (or should be) on what your riding style is and what kind of increase you are looking for. At a minimum, replacing the stock cams with any higher-end cams, will increase your torque and provide greater riding satisfaction.
I just got upgraded my 96" to a 103" with S&S 510G cams and I have to say that it pulls strongly throughout the entire rpm range; plenty of torque and lots of power. The bike runs strong without losing any rideability. The dealer did a canned download to my SEST but I will be bringing it in for a dyno as soon as I break it in (1,000 miles). After reading all the post and doing some research I went with the 255s myself. I won a set of NIB off of Ebay. That and a fuel moto setup should do me just fine. Thanks for all of the help.
+1 on following the various cam posts. For a while I've been wondering what kind of difference the 255's would present with my 103 vs a 96 because mine isn't much more than bigger jugs/pistons compared to a regular 96. The parts manual tells me my Police 103 has the same cams and heads as a 96. Woop-d-doo. The compression is only a half point more than the 96. So, I can't compare mine to other 103's like the OE SE 103's when guys out there make changes to their 103's. The 2300--4500 range mentioned is where I do most of my riding as well. Lately I've been considering waiting a bit longer and saving up for some basic, but better, heads and if so I imagine they'd bump the compression a bit which me wonder if I should my cam selection all over again. The only thing I have working for me is time.

TR 525 cams less noise more power and works better with bigger motor builds with more compresion and not hard on the rocker arms and works great with stock motor..... My 2 cents
What I think is the Woods TW6 will give you a longer and overall taller torque number (accelleration) and about 10 more horses for the same amount of money versus the SE255 cam.
I agree the TW6 will make more peak-HP than the SE255's, but I haven't seen them produce a "longer and overall taller torque number" based on the charts I've seen. What the TW6's will do is move the TQ curve to the right and will likely diminish low-end TQ to some degree given stock compression. It all depends on what you want out of a cam upgrade.
Also, the Wood cams are $400 while the SE255's are $300 (MSRP), and you can find the 255's on Ebay for $150 new and used.

I think you just helped me make up my mind...that's what I want, less noise, more power, and room to grow if I'd want...I will be selling some SE-255s!
Not being much of a wrench, I'm still confused.
Was thinking originally about the 510's but then thought it might be best to go with the 211's for reasons of repair on trips should I encounter a serious breakdown but now the Woods 6 is intriguing.
I am just a rider, not a HP monster. My motor is stock except for SE intake and slip-ons. I just want more torque for 2-up riding (hill country) and better cruising power but I don't want to lose any power out of the hole.

Man, I sure would like to go riding with someone with the 255s. Maybe swap bikes and finally get to the bottom of whether there is any major differences between the 255 and the Woods. I have a feeling they will be slightly different but still very close.
