Default Changed for syn 3 to formula +

I changed the tranny and primary oil from syn 3 to formula +. I read so much about how bad an idea it was to put motor oil (syn 3) in the tranny and primary that I decided to change it. Let me tell you, it make a hell of a difference on the shifting (smooth). My egc only has 1900 miles and I found no metal shavings on the magnets. So maybe syn 3 is not as bad, but why take a chance. Anyway thanks for all the information this forum provides.

Been thinking about doing this myself at the next change. I have a buddy who was a marine engineer for Caterpillar and he uses MoCo oil and will not use Syn3 in anything but the motor. He uses the Formula+ in the primary and tranny.

I changed to Mobil One V Twin last year, put it in all three holes. Seems to work well.

I think it's better than running syn3, but I think you would be happier with a gear lube in the tranny. Something like a 75/90. I run shockproof heavy in the tranny. I have run Mobil1 and Amsoil SVG before as well. As for the primary, you would be surprised how well Dexron III ATF tranny fluid works. It's good and cheap too and available just about everywhere. I think synthetic in a primary is overkill myself but some use it.

Like Dawg said, I've heard good things about ATF in the primary and some even say gear oil works just fine there too although I've never tried either one. I decided to switch from 20-50 in the primary and give the formula+ a try. Clutch action feels much better to me, and the first gear "clunk" is gone when cold and very minimal when warm. YMMV....
