I used amsoil gear lube for the tranny at the last change, didn't notice any difference, klunk still there Will go to formula 1 next time around and see if that makes a difference

The first gear clunk gone is the best.

I always ran Red Line in my previous Harleys. With this 09 I changed at 1000 miles to Redline and seemed to develop a slight tap in the front jug. At the suggestion of a good friend, who maintains a fleet of HDs for a motor squad, I changed to Formula+...Was I amazed..easier shifts, no clunk, ...I would have never done this but thought I'd give it a try. Since I change oil at 2500, there is really no need for ME to spend extra on synthetic...

Motor oil in the primary is fine, but I would use fossil oil instead of synthetic. I've been using Castrol GTX 20w50 for the duration and recently had a tranny bearing replaced, which required removal of the inner-primary and all the components therein. That gave me an opportunity to install the SE compensator and to inspect all hardware in that area. The clutches were fine, as were the primary chain and tensioner, and at 33k miles we re-installed all the original hardware--except the compensator, of course. That told me the oil was doing its job and clutch operation has been excellent, so I'll stick with it. Some use ATF, which is also a good choice IMO, but I would stay away from synthetic oils of any type, as the clutches need some friction to operate properly and a high-tech oil is not needed in that location in any case.
