Default SEST Custom Tune - What to expect ?

Well,
It looks like 2010 is gonna shape up to be a year of minimal mods for various reasons. My cams/and or big bore will need to wait another year or so. In the mean time, I did buy a SEST and will be able to spend the $$ on a custom tune. I have (3) dealers w/in 40 miles + 1 indy so I'll do some inquiring as to tuning experience. That said, I have an 09 FLHT with a SE intake/V&H basic slip-ons/stage 1 download installed. What can I realistically hope to gain with a GOOD custom tune ? HP/TQ increase ? Cooler running motor ? Will I feel anything by seat-of-the pants ? Input please Troop

Why waste the 3-400 dollars on a tune for a mostly stock bike that you will not notice much difference in?

Id wait, do at least cams before spending any $$ on a dyno run, then again..once the cam chest is open its only a bit more labor to do the big bore and heads. I know, its $$.

Going from a download to a tune, you'll pick up a little more hp & torque at the peak(s), but where you'll really gain is in the lower rpms. On top of that, your bike will run cooler and smoother.

A good tune is absolutely worth the money on a Stage 1 bike.

I talked to the Service Advisor at my closest dealer. For less than $50, he told me they'd mate up the SEST, download a canned map and do a dyno run to check the A/F readings to make sure all looked OK. That sounded reasonable and they're good people there. He did say that a custom tune could be several + hours to complete, so figure up to $350 ($70/hr)...

That's an honest answer from your service guy. The problem with a canned map from Harley is that while it will get you in the neighborhood, it's still going to be too lean.

It's hard to go wrong with less than $50 and you could do a proper dyno tune if/when you get cams. That said, seeing how you're in Wisconsin why not give Fuel Moto a ring?

I'm happy with my SERT and tune, numbers in sig. The bike runs cool enough with plenty of power. I've changed cams in other bikes and with this setup it's not worth the extra money for me to that route.....at least for now

READ THIS THREAD I posted. I too thought a proper tune wasn't worth the money. Boy, was I wrong! My bike is not only cooler, it runs stronger, is easier to pull and gets same/better mileage than it did. I wasn't unhappy with it when I started, but I got exactly what I was looking for. take your time and find a competent tuner. Pay him what he wants and you too may be amazed!
